Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

One Sunflower

My morning walk to town today was a cloudy one and 58 degrees with a little breeze.  Went right to the library first and dropped a book down the drop and then walked over to the post office and dropped some mail down the slot.

A jaunt around town and around one of the cemeteries before heading back home again.

I mentioned that the house by the cemetery that got the new back porch was having some more work done in their back yard.  Today I see that they are in the process of having a VERY NICE water feature added to their yard. Wanted to walk down to get a closer look but thought I'd better not.  Will take a picture from the cemetery once it is done.

Very quiet around town, didn't see any people out walking or animals either.  First deer I saw was when I got back home out back of the house.

Sorry no walk pictures today.  Nothing caught my eye.

Walked 5.8 miles
Sunrise - 6:45

I planted so many sunflower seeds this year but didn't have much luck with them.  Just one came up this year and it is just a small one, but I'm happy to have a least this one.  All the petals haven't opened yet but thought I'd better get a picture of it before something happens to it!!  There are two other buds on it so hoping they will bloom too.

Not sure what this is - I guess some kind of moth.

This afternoon we watched 4 deer wander around out back eating and stopping for a drink of water.  Pictures are of the two bucks.  A doe and her pretty big little one were out there too but their pictures didn't come out good enough to post.

Cloudy most of the day with rain in the afternoon.

Made a few more weave-it squares this afternoon and read.

Saturday

64 degrees this morning, cloudy, and breezy when I left walking. It looked like rain so took along my umbrella.  By the time I got to town I could see blue sky through the clouds and was thinking I needn't have bothered taking along my umbrella.

That didn't last though because before long the whole sky turned black and it started raining.  Rained for about 15 minutes and then it was just cloudy.

Walked around both of the cemeteries, down past the day care center and post office, the then around the ball park loop and home again.

Very quiet around town and didn't see any other people.

The barn is done.  It sure went up fast.

Interesting looking mushroom.  Reminds me of a brain.

Down by the apple tree where the deer eat the apples I saw a small buck.  I was walking in the middle of the road and he was at the edge of the road.  He looked up from eating, I said hi there deer, he watched me and then went back to eating.  I was really close to him.  Didn't stop to take a picture or anything because didn't want to do anything to scare him off.

Walked 5.6 miles

☁️     🙂     🌧

After breakfast we drove down to the Dollar General and did a bit of shopping.  Some things are a lot cheaper than at the Shop and Save. Besides we had a coupon for $5 off if you spent $25.

Such changeable weather lately.  Another day of off and on rain and sun throughout the whole day.  Never knew what to expect from one minute to the next.

Remember that counted cross stitch I finished except for the outlining.  It's must be a few months ago now.  Anyway I pulled it out and worked on it this afternoon.  Will be nice to have it finally completed.  The outlining makes such a BIG difference!!

Friday

Another cloudy morning as I walked to town.  66 degrees and windy.

A couple of deer come out of the corn field and stopped to watch me as I walked by.

Once I got to town, walked around town and over to the ball park.  Walked around that loop a couple of times and then over to the cemeteries and walked around them a couple of times too.  Continued down past the Drane house to the barn where the bulls are to see how they were doing, but no bulls today.

From there went to the pond where Ken was waiting and I got a ride home.

Didn't see anyone else out in town.

Walked 5.7 miles

☁️     🙂     ☁️

Ken drove the tractor up to the cabin to get some work done up there.  I stayed home to get some house chores done and then walked up to the cabin late morning. Walked up the lane.  The woods on the right is part of Happy Trails.

And then went up the driveway on the right which goes to the cabin.

Helped gather some stones and then we were ready to get a load of crush and run gravel from the quarry. We're not done at the quarry after all like I thought.  Anyway we walked back to the house and hooked up the trailer to the truck.  Were all set to go for the gravel when a thunderstorm came through so we decided not to go after all.

The rest of the afternoon was rain, more thunder storms and there was even a time or two when the sun came out.

I ended up making some weave-it squares and just puttering about the house the rest of the day.

Junk Yard

A cloudy walk this morning when I left for town.  Windy too and 69 degrees.  A few sprinkles of rain on and off during my walk which kept me cool. Walked to town once again and this time right on through to the ball park.  After walking around that loop, walked back through town and home again.

Lena and her husband Jim were on their way to the ball park loop as I was just leaving.  We had a little chat before continuing on our ways.  A little bit later saw the daughter Rebecca walking in town.

Took another picture of the new barn being put up.  Roof is on and siding has begun on the back of it.

Haven't heard many birds chirping in the morning when I leave.  But did see a whole mess of goldfinches.  The usual deer around and a couple of rabbits too.

Walked 5.5 miles

☁️     🙂     🌧

Going to church last evening was great.  Wonderful to see some of the people we haven't seen for months and months.  Wednesday was a good day for us to start going to church again.  Only about 35 people or so there and wearing masks coming and leaving.  We both felt comfortable and plan on going next week again.  In time we will get back to going Sunday morning and evening again too.
Sure nice to see you Bettye! 😀

This morning I baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies and didn't even eat one, but did eat a bit of the batter as I made them!  Cookies will probably be our snack this evening instead of ice cream.

Ken loaded up the pickup truck this morning with a bunch of scrap metal and aluminum that we've had sitting around up near the wood shop just past the cabin.  Then after lunch we took it to the junk yard.  The junk yard gave us $35 for all of it.  Not much but it was worth it just to get rid of the stuff.
No, this isn't all ours!! 😁 We just added to it.

Read this afternoon and finished the second book in the Liberty Trilogy, Fire on the Hill by Gretta Curran Browne.  A historical fiction about Ireland.  Very good and will start the third book of the trilogy when I finished reading the Miss Read book that I've started.

Wed Night Service

Walked to town and around both of the cemeteries and then headed back home again.  Didn't walked through town at all.

It had rained over night but by my walking time it had stopped and was a bit foggy.
The temperature was 55 degrees and no breeze.

The barn or whatever that is being built in front of the barn is coming along fast.  Today when I walked by the metal roof was already up.

Didn't see any people out walking this morning.

Saw a few deer as I do most days.

By the time I got home the sun was out and shining and we had another day of sunshine and cool breezes.

Sunrise was 6:41 and I walked 5.5 miles.

☁️     🙂     🌤

We had pancakes for breakfast this morning.  Did the usual morning chores around the house and then we took our garbage out to the dump. It is called the Refuge Center but I still call it the dump.  From there we stopped at the library to pick up another Homicide DVD.  When we got home it was lunch time.

After lunch Ken went up by the cabin and I stayed home to get some house work done.  Also made macaroni salad to go with the Italian hot sausages we had for supper that I had put in the slow cooker earlier in the day. Usually have the sausages with peppers and onions but today ate them like hotdogs on a bun.

Had a little time for reading in the afternoon before Ken got home for supper.

We decided to go to church this evening.  We thought the Wed night service would be a good service to start with because it is the one with the least amount of people in it.  We shall see how it goes.  So we are off now and so happy to be going!!

Dentist

It was a cloudy morning for walking today, 66 degrees and windy.

Walked to town and around the lower cemetery a couple of times.  Then just walked around town before heading back home again.

Work was being done on the building in front of the barn in yesterday's picture this morning already as I walked passed on my way to town.  I could see them putting the trusses up.

Saw a couple of young bucks at the apple tree.  They are the only deer I saw.

Lena and Pam were walking around town but too far away to say hi so we just waved.

Walked 5.5 miles

☁️     🙂     ☁️

Food shopping day at Stop and Shop and only needed a few things so it didn't take long.

We were home for a little while and then had to leave again.  This time to go to the dentist which is right in town for our 6 month cleaning.  I like to get it over with so I go first.  Different going to the dentist this time with all the safety rules but all went well.

We were surprised and sad to find that Latisha is no longer the hygienist.  We both liked her so much. Very gentle, friendly, and so nice!!  The new hygienist was fine but not as gentle.

While it was Ken's turn I walked over to the library and dropped a DVD off at the library and then walked on over to the pond.  Walked around it once and then sat on a bench and did a little reading.  When Ken was done at the dentist he picked me up at the pond and we drove home.  Glad that is over for another 6 months.

64 degrees this morning and cloudy when I left on my walk.  Saw a little bit of sun trying to break through the clouds but it didn't quite make it.

The sun did come out later in the morning and we ended up having a beautiful sunny cool summer day.

Counted 9 deer down the road from my house running away from the apple tree.  I seem to be always disturbing the deer having their breakfast!

Had my usual walk to town, around the cemeteries, the ball park and around town.

Saw Lena and her husband Jim out walking.

Walked 5.9 miles

☁️     🙂     ☁️

Got the sheets washed and out on the line and chili started in the slow cooker.  Ken was nice and cut up the peppers and celery for me.

Then we left to get a load of gravel.  I always say we went to the stone store but it is actually at the quarry.  There are two quarries near us and we live about 14 miles away from each of them in different directions.  The one in Maryland has the grey stone and the one in Pennsylvania has the redish stone.  We went to the PA one today.

We put the gravel on the path in between the rock that we crushed.  Once it rains the gravel will have the dust washed off and it will look more red.

We had some gravel left over that we just put around where it needed a bit more.

We took a few rest breaks and sat on the porch.  Didn't see the deer in the yard today.

A couple of years ago our friend Dennis gave us some Wisteria that he potted for us.  Planted it along the rebar fence we made and hoped for the best.  After two years now it is finally looking good and growing well. Still hasn't flowered yet but maybe next year.

This month we have been living in our new house here at Happy Trails for two years.  Previously we lived in town for 5 years.

Nice that we had the chili cooking all day so didn't have to cook supper.  We used the chili in taco salad.

It's been another busy day here at Happy Trails which makes for good sleeping.

Thanks for stopping by.
A happy day to you.

When I left this morning on my walk it was 62 degrees, cloudy and no breeze.  Walked to town and today walked around both of the cemeteries and didn't walk through town.

Looks like something is getting built in front of the barn, maybe a second barn? Might be hard to see in the picture. Will have to watch and see what develops.

The house that recently had the back porch added that I see when I walk around the lower cemetery is having something else done in the back yard, but don't know what yet.  There was a digger and piles of dirt and crushed stone.  Something else to watch and see what develops.  Keeps my walk interesting.

Walked 5.8 miles

☁️     🙂     ☁️

After our breakfast of French toast Ken went to the cabin to clear out some of the over growth of weeds and little trees around it.  Our next project is to build a little out house up by the cabin.

I would have liked to go along with him but really had to stay home and get some house stuff done.  Haven't done much cleaning all week.

Ken was back home lunch time.  We packed a lunch and went to MacDonald's parking lot to eat while we watched the comings and goings.  Place was really hopping.  Still only drive through and take out open.  Also stopped at the library to pick up the DVD (Newhart) that was ready for us.

I spent most of the afternoon reading.  Finished one book and started another.

Crushed Rock Pictures

A mix of sun and clouds this morning when I left on my walk.  60 degrees and no breeze.  Had my usual walk to town and went straight down the main road, passed our old house, walked the street behind the house and then turned around and walked the same way back home again.

Quite a few deer around this morning all along the way to the main road which is 1.3 miles from my house.

Rebecca was out walking in town.
Saw Dwayne too and we stopped for a little chat.

As I walked passed the bakery two truck drivers walked out of the bakery and sat down down at a table in front to eat their donuts.  We all said good morning and then I saw them bow their heads and pray before eating.  Such a nice thing to see. 🙂

Saw a couple of men setting up a yard sale as I walked passed.  It was all tools which were all polished and looked well cared for.  I stopped to talk and was told that the tools are very old, some as old at the 1700's.  Didn't ask prices but I'm sure they weren't cheap.  A yard sale didn't seem like the best place to sell something like that.  After I left thought I should have taken a picture but didn't want to go back.

Walked 5.6 miles

 🌤     🙂     🌤

All the rock that was crushed yesterday was spread out and then we went and crushed  another 12 buckets and spread them out. As promised here's some pictures of the work so far. Ken is going to put a small stone wall on the edge under and up to the lattice.  Where the plastic is will be gravel and will probably go get that tomorrow.

Once again after working we sat on the front porch and this time had ice cream cones while we discussed a future project.

Pizza for supper tonight.

Bees Nest

A sunny morning for my walk to town today and just 51 degrees. Walked around the lower cemetery, then passed the day care center and over to and around the ball park loop.  Back up to the main road and home again.

Saw Dwayne walking out of the town as I was getting to town.

A couple deer were eating the apples again and looking into the field saw a whole mess of deer, too many to count!!

Can you spot the bees nest?  Was surprised to see it hanging so low to the ground along the side of the road.

Sunrise: 6:35
Sunset: 8:05

Walked 5.9 miles

We went and did more rock crushing today. First time we filled up the buckets was in the morning and we came back to the house and spread it around. Had lunch and then went back and crushed more stone.  Second time we left the stones in the buckets in the back of the truck and will spread it around tomorrow. Will take a picture tomorrow of the progress so far.  It is really starting to look nice.

We stopped working about 2:30 and sat out on the porch for a bit.  We usually just have the 4 Does stay around the house for a few hours at a time but today there was a buck out front down by another natural fence.  I'm wondering if it could be one of the little ones from last year and that's why it he doesn't run away from us.  Last year there were 2 Does and three fawns.  Anyway it was nice to have him around today.

We have a tiny pond out front where some frogs live.  Watched two of them jump out of the water and sun themselves on the rocks surrounding the pond.  Was going to take a picture but too lazy to get off the porch!

Supper for today we grilled hamburgers outside and I made French fries.  Well didn't make them, the fries were frozen and just heated them up in the oven.

Rhubarb

It was 55 degrees this morning with a mix of sun and clouds when I left for my walk to town.  Once I got to town just walked around both of the cemeteries a couple of times and  didn't walk around town at all.

No people around this morning and only saw a deer and a rabbit.  An uneventful walk but still a good one and a great way to start my day.

Walked 6 miles
The golden rod has started blooming which means fall isn't far away.

🌤     🙂     🌤

Did a few chores this morning and then late morning we went out to do a few errands.  A stop at the drugstore, the library which had a book ready for pick up for me, and a stop at the gas station to get more gas for the tractor.

Home for lunch.
We were going to do some more rock crushing but decided to take a day off.
I walked around outside at Happy Trails.

Didn't think I'd get any decent rhubarb this year after transplanting the plants two times but I did.  Not a whole lot but enough to make Rhubarb Cobbler and this afternoon I made some.  There wasn't enough to make a whole one so made two small ones.  Ken doesn't care for it so they are both mine!  I'll be having one tonight for my snack with some vanilla ice cream.  Thinking I should only eat half of one at a time but pretty sure will end up eating the whole thing.  I usually have pretty good will power but NOT when it comes to Rhubarb!

Got the chain painted for the fire hydrant and put on.  Now it looks how I remember fire hydrants from when I was a kid.

What beautiful weather today.  A bright blue sky with sun and some white puffy clouds, a nice cool breeze and the temperature in the low 70's.
