Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

KitCat's House

My walk started out in a very light mist which soon ended
and then it was just cloudy.
36 degrees
Sunrise 7:24
Walked 6 miles

Walked up and down the main street first,
then the ball park, both cemeteries, around town again
and back to the Jeep.

Dropped the Christmas cards off at the post office when I walked by
and a book went down the drop at the library.

Lisa was out again walking and we had another little chat.

I never got an answer to the text about how much money
was made at the cookie sale.
So I stopped in at the town hall and was going to ask
Ruth Ann but she had just left.
There were a few guys at the town hall and I asked them
and sure enough they knew.
The cookie sale brought in $780.

Not much activity in town this morning.

Mary Miller Strauss, the author of the book I'm reading
about our town lived in the house across from the lower cemetery.
In fact KitCat lives in her old house.
The house started out small but there have been some
additions added to it.

The original house is the part that is brick.
Looks like a cute little house and liked it better as a little house
without all the additions.

We went shopping at Shop and Save this morning.
I don't enjoy shopping but I do like putting all the groceries
away in the pantry.

Wrote out some more Christmas cards.

I've started another little knitting project.
I'm making a pair of purple slippers
for my little friend Kinsley.

I have been enjoying the book about our town.
So many names are familiar to me and some of the people that have
died I've seen their names on the gravestones.
Lots of things have changed but a lot are the same too.

In the prologue Mary writes:

My story has to do with the beautiful valley of Accident, the little village
at the foot of Hickory Ridge, the hum of the farm machinery,
the churches and schools, and the remaining landmarks of the past.
This lovely valley nestled high in the Alleghanies, and a part of the Appalachians.
My story is concerned with simple joys, timelessness, and perspective
found in a way of life that has made great progress yet lies so lose to the past.

I offer this book, not as a literary achievement, but as a souvenir
warm with interest for the valley I love.

That's all I've got for today.
Hope your day was a happy one.

...it's nice to have a local author.

That's a good chunk of change for the Drane House.

I like that house - both the new and old sides make it a nice-looking home.

I love the prologue of the book - it's important for these communities to write down their history - all too soon, those that lived it and those reading it will be gone.

Wow! Kitcat house really did grow. I suppose as the family grew more space was needed.
I used to enjoy grocery shopping more but now I find one has to be so careful. Companies may not raise the price but they lower the amount in the package.

That's a nice house for KitCat.

Hi Karen. I'm with you. The KitCat house looks better without all the additions. $780 for quite a bit to make with a bake sale! That books sounds so good. I am off to the library tonight too. I book I asked for is on hold. See you again tomorrow.

I think I know someone else who loves the little village at the foot of Hickory Ridge nestled high in the Alleghenies. 😊

I agree that the house was a cute little place before the additions. It still looks nice, but was cuter before.
I like the prologue of the book. It sounds very interesting, especially if you live there!

I’m gradually working through my Christmas card list, too. Interesting how those additions have been made to that beginning little brick house. That’s a good total for a cookie sale! We’re having gray, drizzly weather here all week.

The landscaping on that house is really good as well!

That was a nice amount that the bake sale raised.
I think I like that house better with just the brick part too.

Hello,
The bake sale did great! I am glad KitCat has a home and is not a stray.
It is nice to have a local author writing about your town. Take care, enjoy your day!

Sounds like a nice profit was made from the bake sale. Interesting to be able to learn the history of KitCat's house. It is evident from the prologue that Mary had a great fondness for the Accident area.

It would be fun to read a book about the town you live in. You get so much done every day and still have time to read. I haven't even bought Christmas cards yet. I have always been one to put things off until the last minute. Hey, that might be a good New Years resolution...to stop doing that.

Those baked goods brought in a good amount of money! The prologue about Accident makes you want to keep reading.

That is wonderful that the cookies brought in that much money!

I love the prologue to the book. It is something I would pick up in a heartbeat.
