Yard work

We wanted to get an early start working on the yard at the old house so I didn't get a chance to walk this morning.  I did get a lot of exercise doing the yard work though.  I mowed the front yard again, raked and bagged 10 big bags of leaves, picked up sticks in the back yard and mowed the back too.  It took me four and a half hours.  Ken went through more things for the garage sale, picked up sticks too and cleaned the driveway with the leaf blower and got the weeds picked out of the stone driveway.  We got a lot done and now I will just have to mow and edge every so often.
Here's a few pictures of the old house. It is 105 years old.

It was a beautiful day for working outside.  Cool in the 60's with lots of sunshine. We worked all morning and then went to Subway and I had a turkey sub for lunch.  We also did a few errands and now here we are back home for a while.  After doing yard work all morning I don't feel like planting the flowers here at home.  Maybe tomorrow afternoon.

We will be going out for pizza later for supper which I'm looking forward to.
Hope you're Saturday is a good one.

A beautiful morning

Oh my, what a beautiful morning.  Now that all the storms and rain have left the area it was a bright, clear morning with lots of sunshine and a temperature of 50 degrees. You just couldn't ask for better weather for walking around the lake.  I walked down the new sidewalk to the pier,  which you can barely see on the other side of the blue coming down barrier.  The sod is so nice and green from all the rain.  I thought they would put up a railing but I guess they aren't going to after all.
I stood on the pier and looked down into the water and could see a few fish swimming around.  I looked up and out and this is the view that was before me.  You can see one of the two little boats that were out on the lake.
There were only a handful of people out which really surprised me seeing how beautiful the weather was.  There were more people out yesterday.
I only saw ducks, geese, and heard lots of birds.  I wonder where all the other wildlife was hiding.
The lake usually has lots of lily pads and I notice the ones coming up in the water are all brown this year.  I wonder if draining the lake down low had anything to do with it.  I hope they turn green and have not died already.
All too soon my walk was over and I was back home again.
I found a dime and a penny and walked 6.5 miles.

My email is acting up.  I can receive mail but can't send it out.  It just sits in the outbox.  It isn't my computer though, but Verizon.  This happened once before and it just starting working again after a couple of days.  I still have other email addresses to use though so I can still send email if I need to.

After all the rain, today was a good day to catch up on my laundry and I had three loads drying out on the line today.  It turned pretty again windy which made for fast drying clothes.

I finished up the last of my house cleaning this morning and after I eat lunch I was planning on going outside to plant my flowers, but it has turned cloudy and it is so windy out that I think I'll save that for a nicer day.

Not sure what I want to do after lunch yet.  I'll just have to see what comes along.

Hope your Friday is a good one.

A walk and work

A warm 72 degrees this morning and very windy.  It was raining when I woke up but had stopped by the time I was ready to go walking.  While walking I heard a few claps of thunder and a few very large drops of rain came down and then nothing.  So I had a nice dry walk around the lake.  Quite a few people out considering what the sky looked like.  I took this picture down at the small end of the lake.
I'm standing on the footbridge at the small end of the lake here.  Standing there with the wind blowing it almost felt like I was on the bow of a boat going down the lake.  I just stood there for a while pretending. : )
It's nice to see the lake nice and full again.  They had drained it down quite low while working on the boat ramp/pier.
Here the heron looks for breakfast at the edge of the water.
I ran into a walker friend Ben, who I haven't seen in quite a long time.  We stopped to talk.  He retired a few months ago and has moved back to Ohio where he grew up.  He's back for a few days visit and came to walk around the lake once again.  I met him again on the other side.  He wasn't making his way around the lake very fast today because he had to stop to talk to everyone he knew. : )

I am really thankful that I have this lake to walk around every day and that I'm able to do it without even thinking about it.  I am also thankful for the desire for walking.  : )
I walked my usual 6.4 miles.

It was very windy and seemed to get even more windy when I was back in my neighborhood.  It is trash day and the cans were blowing over (with trash in them) and there were flying boxes and bags all over the place.  A bunch of us were out there trying to pick things up and get the cans set up again.  The wind settled down a little bit so that the cans stayed upright again.  It was like we had our own mini tornado.

I haven't been so good this week with cleaning a little bit each day so I'm home today getting my house cleaning caught up.  Not a very exciting day, but I will certainly feel good after working and every thing is spic and span.

Look for those bits of happiness scattered throughout your day.

Message in a bottle

It was 67 degrees this morning when I started on my walk.  It was a cloudy morning with a very light sprinkle of rain falling.  Not enough to get soaking wet but just enough to keep me damp and cool.  I can't wear my rain slicker on warm mornings. The material doesn't breath and I get very warm.  I'd rather get wet from the rain than from sweat!
I walked around neighborhoods through the paths.  Very quiet and at times walking down the path, the only thing I heard was the water flowing in the brook and the birds singing.  A few people were out walking dogs and I saw a few runners also.
I walked 6.4 miles.

Quite a few of you have had the same problem with your cameras that I did.  Thanks for the battery suggestion.  I think that may be it.  My battery hasn't been holding a charge for as long as it used to.  Ken said his camera did the same thing the other day!  We have ordered two more new batteries.  Hopefully that will cure the problem.  Thanks again.

I plan on planting a few flowers in my little front yard.  I bought these plants in shades of purple, pink and red at Lowes.  I'll be out there planting them in the next couple of days.

Strange acting camera

A beautiful spring morning with a temperature of 67 degrees.  Lots of sunshine and a slight breeze - what a great morning for a walk around the lake.  A lot of people out again.  This is the time of year when I see a lot of people - before it gets too hot for them.  There is always the regulars I see though, just like me, out there in all kinds of weather.  I wore my old walking shoes and will until I buy another pair.  I will not wear those new shoes for walking, but I'll keep them to just wear around for every day.  I don't break in my walking shoes.  If they aren't comfortable on my first walk I won't wear them again.  When I get a good walking shoe, they are comfortable right from the start.  With all the walking I do they have to be . : )
I saw the heron along the path by the stream on the way to the park.  The other day when I was sitting on the deck, I saw one fly over my house!

My camera was acting strange this morning.  When I turn it on, the lens goes out and back in again when I turn the camera off.  I had taken a couple of pictures this morning with no problem.  Then when I went to turn it on again later the lens kept going in and out over and over again.  I finally had to hold the lens in and not let it out when it finally turned off.  That happened a couple of times and then finally it went back to normal.  I'd better start looking around for a new camera.  I don't think I could function very well without one.  : )
Everything is so nice and green now.  Look how nice the path looks with green on either  side - I love this time of year.
I walked 6.4 miles.
Found a penny in the Giant parking lot.

I was about to leave the house for my knitting group this morning when the UPS  man came with a letter for me.   It was something I needed to get notarized and mailed out again quickly so I made a stop at the credit union to get that done before going to knitting so I was late getting there.  I sewed weave-it squares together there today.

I parked over at the old house and walked over to knitting because I did some more yard work after knitting.  I spent an hour and a half picking up more sticks, raking, bagged leaves and mowed the rest of the front yard.  I filled three bags of leaves and one trash can of sticks.  A little more left to do in the front and then I can start on the back.  Of course I'll have to mow and trim the front often but at least it will be easier now.

Thought about skipping lunch completely because it was so late by the time I got back home but decided I should eat something, so I had a small baked potato.
I should be getting some stuff done around the house but here I sit on the computer instead.   Oh well, the work will just have to wait. : )

Till next time........

My new shoes : (

The morning started out warm with a temperature of 62 degrees. At the start of my walk there was some fog around but it burned off quickly and my walk was nice and sunny.
I got a new pair of walking shoes on Saturday.  I have been wearing New Balance walking shoes for years, but just couldn't find a pair that felt good this time.  I tried on a pair of Nike and they felt great - very light with good padding inside.
So this morning I was all excited to be wearing my brand new pair of shoes.  I walked about a mile and knew these were not good walking shoes for me.  I could feel my left heal rubbing, and another half mile I could feel a hot spot which meant I was going to get a blister.  I was walking around the lake and was about a quarter of the way around and took the path to the main road and came back home.  Just coming up to the main road a couple of trees lay across the path here, being blown down from last nights storm.
By the time I got home, sure enough I had a blister on the back of my left heal.  I had only walked a little over three miles.  I put one of these band-aids on for blisters on my heal,
put on my old walking shoes and was out the door again.  My walk continued as I walked along a couple of paths through the neighborhood.  A lot of people were out this morning by the lake and on the second part of my walk.  I saw lots of birds and a few rabbits.
When I walked passed a neighborhood of townhouses I found a nickel between two parked cars waiting for me to pick it up.
I was home after walking a little over three miles this time too, so walked a total of 6.6 miles.  My heal was just fine for the rest of the way with the band-aid and my old shoes.

I never did walk yesterday morning but I got a good amount of exercise doing yard work at the old house.  We left early morning and I spent four hours doing heavy yard work with a bit of help from Ken.  He is getting things ready for a yard sale he hopes to have some week in the near future at the house.  When we lived there I had the front yard looking really nice with lots of gardens, with rock paths and stone walls.  It was a lot to keep up but I enjoyed it and would work in the yard most days.  Now that we don't live there I just can't keep up with it.  So I am in the process of taking the gardens out, moving the rock and stone to the back of the yard and just making it easier in the long run to take care of.  I just want to be able to go over there and mow and trim and be done with it quickly.  We have let the yard go and it looks really bad.  Four hours have just put a dent in the work.  But with the nice weather coming up it, I should be able to get it all done. We have no plans to sell the house yet.  Ken loves the huge garage we have there and he has a work shop out back too.  We will sell the house one day when the prices decide to go back up.

I finally got outside today and washed my very dirty car and now she's looking good again.  No car washes for my car - I like to wash it myself. : )

Such a pretty sunny day out so far.  I ate lunch out on the deck and now I have to get some work done in the house.  I'll be out on the deck again later though.

A happy day to you on this fine Monday.

Happy Easter

Mark 16:6 and 7
But he said to them,
Do not be alarmed.
You seek Jesus of Nazareth,
who was crucified.
He is risen!
He is not here.
See the place where they laid Him.
But go,
tell His disciples -
and Peter -
that He is going before you into Galilee;
there you will see Him as He said to you.

I've always liked the part of the Easter story when one of the two criminals being crucified with Jesus says to the other one,
Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?  And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong. Then he said to Jesus, Lord remember me when You come into Your kingdom.
And Jesus said to him, Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.
Luke 23:40-43

I feel such joy and thankfulness in my heart knowing that Jesus died for me so that I may have eternal life.  What a gift!! : )
My one wish would be that you all know Jesus as I do.
Jesus is why I am Happyone.

A very Happy Easter to you all.

Another rainy walk

The rain from yesterday and last night continued on right through to morning so I had a rainy walk.  The temperature was 45 and when I started out in my rain pants and slicker it was just misting out and was like that for most of my walk.  Then about a  mile and a half from home it really started coming down.  I'm sure glad I wore my rain gear!  I stayed along the sidewalks and walked down to the end of Gray Rock and back home again. A very quiet morning.  Except for some birds all the wildlife were somewhere trying to stay dry.  Just saw a couple of people and only a handful of cars.  The rain has made everything so nice and green and once the sun decides to come out again we will appreciate the sunshine even more.
I'm glad to be able to get out and walk, even in the rain.
I walked 6.3 miles.

The Easter musical at church was very nice and once again I'm moved by the talent we have in our small church.

Well, we didn't get the nice sunny day for the egg hunt, so it will be inside the church instead.  I'm sure it will be a great time for the kids anyway.
Ken and I were going to go over to the old house and spend some time in the yard getting it back into some reasonable looking order, but the rain put a stop to that idea.

Since Ken was home this morning when I got back from walking I made us some nice pancakes for breakfast.
Not sure what the rest of the day will bring yet but we will enjoy the time together whatever we decide. : )

Till next time.......

A stack of ice cream

Today started out cool with a temperature of 44 degrees, cloudy with a slight breeze.  The sun did peek out a couple of times but it just couldn't compete with all the clouds.  On the way to the lake I spotted the fox running up ahead and he then slipped into the woods by all the skunk cabbage.  The skunk cabbage has seemed to spring up over night and the woods here along the path is filled with it.  It doesn't smell if you just walk by but if you crumple the leaves it really does smell like a skunk.  I know I've tried it.
The white egret was at the waters edge looking for fish again and I saw a couple of deer.  The red winged black bird was not on his favorite tree this morning but I spotted a few of them on the other side of the lake.
The sod is in by the boat ramp/pier and they have it blocked off for watering.  On the other side by the parking lot they just planted seed and then put straw on top of it.  I saw a small boat on the lake so they must have used the boat ramp.  The boat was too far off to take a picture.
A fair amount of people out around the lake, walkers, runners, dog walkers and even a bike.  All trying to get in their exercise before it starts to rain.
It was a great to be able to start another day off with a walk.
I walked 6.5 miles.

We have changed our brand of ice cream from Weis brand to Turkey Hill  and last night we stopped to pick up a new supply of it.  We stocked up because it was on sale - $2.50.  My current favorite flavor is called Lady Liberty Mint - mint ice cream with chocolate cake crunchies and crunch chocolate cookie swirl.  Doesn't that sound good!!?
Here is a stack of the ice cream we bought.  Which flavor would you choose? : )
I took the cookies for the egg hunt over to church.  I will not be helping out with the actual egg hunt tomorrow.  I just stuffed the eggs and made cookies for it.
Next stop was at the library but I was disappointed to find it closed today and the weekend because of Easter.  Oh well, it's not like I really need more books to add to my reading pile.  Once I got home I realized I could have dropped the books off in the book drop.

I'm home this afternoon doing stuff around the house.  I'll do the usual reading later on.  Tonight Ken and I are going to church to see an Easter musical put on by some talented members of my church.

Hope your Friday was a happy day and a great start to your weekend.

Cookies

A cloudy morning with lots of wind and a temperature of 48 degrees.  The sun was fighting its way through the clouds by the time I got back home.  I had a very pleasant walk around the lake.  Saw Jeannie, a walker friend who I haven't seen in months and stopped to chat.  She has been walking the mall and decided to come back to the lake now that it's light and warmer in the morning.  Just an average amount of people out this morning.  I didn't see a lot of wildlife - don't know where all the animals were hiding today.  I did spot a few gray catbirds and a mallard duck was walking along the path.
Here's the latest pier picture.  Workers were laying down this layer of I'm not sure what and there was a couple of trucks loaded with sod which they will put on top of this stuff.
Today I walked my usual 6.4 miles.

I enjoyed my afternoon out on the deck yesterday.  I made some weave-it squares like I planned to do.  I also read some more of the book One Thousand Gifts.  I've read a about a quarter of it and have decided not to read the rest.  I know everyone loves this book but I just wasn't getting anything out of it.  It's about learning to be thankful for all the little things in life even through the bad times which leads to a happier life.  I already understand what she means and have learned this lesson a long time ago. : )
I sat out on the deck until I heard Ken's car coming up the street.  I snapped this picture of him in his car from the deck.
Here he is again coming around the back to the garage.

Today I (and others) baked chocolate chip cookies for the Easter Egg Hunt at church on Saturday.  I didn't eat any cookies, but I probably ate enough cookie dough to have eaten at lease one!!
Then I put two cookies each into 30 little plastic snack bags.  They will be given out to the kids who come to the egg hunt.
Lots of people praying for nice weather on Saturday - at least for no rain. : )

I'd better go and take my clothes off the line.  They have been getting quite a whipping around the line with all the wind out there today.  I'm hoping I didn't lose any clothes to the wind.  Who knows someone may end up with an unmentionable plastered to one of their windows by the wind.

Enjoy your day and if you see someone with a smile, give them one of yours.

A sunny walk and day

A nice sunny walk this morning.  It was 51 degrees, no wind and just a perfect morning for walking.  I didn't walk on any special route and just wandered here and there.  I only saw a few people and for the most part the morning was my own.  A rabbit hopped along the edge of a path, robins picked worms out of the ground, a blue jay called to another high up in a tree and a couple of deer hid in the woods as I walked by.
Every where I walked was so pretty with the green grass and flowering trees.  Here is just a glimpse of the where I walked and what I saw on this beautiful morning.
I walked by this beautiful pink dogwood tree,
 and along the road.
Over a footbridge in the woods,
 and along the sidewalk here.
Then along another path with a flowering red bud tree.
Before I knew it I had walked 6.8 miles and it was time to go back home.

I got everything done I had to do in the morning around the house.  I was so busy getting things done that I forgot to eat breakfast so for lunch I made a pancake and had one with syrup and put some RediWhip on top.

As I type this now it is 79 degrees outside.  I plan to spend the rest of the afternoon sitting out on the deck.  I am going to read and make weave-it squares and enjoy this nice weather.  There is a chance of thunder storms again later today, but just a chance.  I'm thinking they will pass us right by.

Hope it's nice where you are and you too got to spend some of the day outside enjoying it.
A smile from me to you.

Walking, knitting and another old picture

A pretty warm morning with a temperature of 54.  No wind, but no sun either - a cloudy dreary morning as I made my way around the lake. I didn't think there was any rain in the forecast but a light shower came along to get us all a bit damp.  It didn't last long though.  I saw a couple of bunny rabbits and they are always good to make me smile watching them hop away with their little white cotton tails.  The white egret was standing at the waters edge waiting for a fish.  There were a about a half dozen geese having a very loud discussion over property rights. They can get pretty loud!
Here's the latest work on the pier/boat ramp.  The path is blocked off here and I had to go to the left up on the grass and around.
This is taken standing on the grass looking down.
This is from the other side.
Quite a few people out around the lake including a lot of fishermen.
I walked 6.5 miles.

It wasn't raining when I left for my Tuesday knitting group but did once I was there.  We heard it coming down hard on the roof and even heard a rumble of thunder.  By the time I left it was drizzly.  Next nice day I'll be out washing my car again.

I was really hungry when I got home and had one of my favorite lunches - a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  It is especially good on home made toasted bread. : )

Here is another picture from my past.  I am only 6 months old and that is Paka holding me who is my great grandfather (mothers grandfather) and it is the only picture I have of him.
He was from Holland where he, I'm pretty sure, was a sea captain.  Any relatives reading this, please comment if you know anything about him.  We called him Paka (pocka) - maybe that means grandfather in Dutch?

Just hanging around home this afternoon doing a little bit of this and that on a rainy day.

Hope all is going well in your part of the world.

A happy sunny walk

While walking today someone asked how I was.  My answer, It's early morning, I'm out walking around the lake in the sunshine, I'm great. : ) Their reply was, Me too.
Temperature was 44 when I started my walk and thank goodness the wind has finally stopped.  Lots of people out this morning and I stopped to chat to a few walking friends so I was out a little longer than usual.
Lots of wild life around.  I stopped to watch sea gulls take dive bombs into the lake to catch fish.  An Osprey glided through the air, the beaver swam by, the heron standing on the rocks at the edge took off in flight and I saw 8 deer.  Two American coots were on the lake as well as all the geese and mallard ducks.  I spotted the green heron also.  Quite a lively morning.
The red bud trees are beginning to bloom now as you can see from the picture.  My lake is just off to the right up along the path just a bit.
It was a great walk and I walked my usual 6.4 miles.
Yesterday I didn't walk around the lake but along the paths in the woods and I spotted the Barred Owl again and got a little better picture this time.
Lots of trees and branches down along the paths too from all the rain and wind.

Palm Sunday

Mark 11:7-10
Then they brought the colt to Jesus
and threw their clothes on it,
and He sat on it.

And many spread their clothes on the road,
and others cut down leafy branches
from the trees and spread them on the road.

Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying
Hosanna!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

Blessed is the kingdom of our father David,
that comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest!

Happy Palm Sunday to you.

Stuffing eggs

47 degrees this morning and cloudy for my walk and at times down right windy.  Rain was on the way and I was hoping to get home before it started.  At times I felt a few sprinkles but they never amounted to much so I stayed dry.  I didn't walk on any route and these are the days I'm glad I have a pedometer.  I can just walk wherever I feel like it and still keep track of my miles.  Spotted the clump of daffodils here along one of the paths.  I wonder if a squirrel dug the bulb up out of someones yard, buried it here and then forgot about it.  Saw three deer and stopped to watch them until they ran away.
Only saw a few other people out walking dogs.  A pretty quiet morning.
Walked over by the liquor store hoping to find some coins and I was not disappointed.  I found 1 quarter, 2 dimes, a nickle and a penny.

This morning I cut up the Pumpkin Bread I made the other day, put plastic wrap on it and brought it over to church.  For years the Saturday before Easter there is a big Easter Egg Hunt at church and people come from all over to take part in it.   Today I went to help fill the little plastic eggs with candy for the hunt next Saturday. Some of us brought food and we ate and talked for a bit until getting down to work.
This is the plate I fixed for myself - my breakfast and lunch combined.
Yes, that is a piece of my pumpkin bread there too.
The eggs and candy sit here waiting to get filled.
And here is where the work got done.
We filled 3,500 eggs.
It was fun.  Pastor caught me putting a tootsie roll in my mouth instead of an egg.  :-) While there I got to talking to a few women and they told me about another knitting, quilting, sewing group that meets on Monday mornings.  I told them I'd stop by some Monday morning.  Maybe I'll take up quilting. : )  I could always take on another project!!

So now I'm back home and it is a very rainy day.  I'll just putter around the house this afternoon.  Ken went to a gun show with a friend for the day but he'll be home supper time and then we will go out to eat somewhere.

Blogger friend Kathy, identified the owl I saw in yesterday's post as a Barred Owl.  Thanks Kathy.  : )  Hear what they sound like below.

Hope your Saturday is a happy day for you.
A smile from me to you.

Happy Friday

Another day of walking in the sunshine and the temperature was 41 degrees on this Friday morning.  I decided to walk one of my connect the path routes where I walk on sidewalks and paths through the woods.  Coming across this fork I kept to the right.
At the end of the path I made a right, crossed a street and as I was walking over the bridge over a little stream I looked down and saw these two geese sitting in the water in a storm drain looking right at home.
I walked up past the school and saw this on the path leading away from the school.  I wonder who Baby is, and what her answer was.
After walking down a sidewalk along a street I popped back onto a path that headed back in the woods.  I'm so glad I happened to be on this one path because I saw an owl fly through the trees and land in a tree.  How cool is that!!  I zoomed in with my camera and was able to get a picture of him.  The picture was very dark and I had to lighted it up some.  Picture not that great but I'm happy to have one at all.
Lots of birds out calling to each other or maybe they were just singing because it was such a nice morning.  I saw six deer but not many people along the paths, only three women running together.
Before I knew it my walk was over and I was back home after walking 6.3 miles.

Yesterday afternoon I got all three pieces of furniture up the stairs and found places for all of them.  I didn't have any trouble getting them up the stairs - people are always surprised how strong I really am.
I put the rocking chair here by the oak secretary and fireplace.  An afghan I made with weave-it squares hangs on the back.  The little heart shaped pillow which says Love was given to me by Scout and Japhy, my two youngest grandchildren.
The bookcase  I put in the corner of the living room.  Front windows are to the left.  Some of my white planter collection sits there as well as some books that I have to read.  In the basket I keep thank you notes that I've gotten throughout the years.  Some days when I'm not so happy I reach in and read one and it makes me happy again.
The round table I carried up three flights of stairs to my loft and on it sits the white bedspread I'm knitting out of white sampler squares.  Some yarn for future projects as well.  The blocks almost spell out happyone but I don't have an e block.
I finished reading Toys by James Patterson.  I liked the book at first but not so much as I read on.  It was okay.  It made for book number 17 in my goal of 75 for the year.

Yesterday when I made the Pumpkin Bread I left the nuts out of it because so many people are allergic to nuts.  The loaf I kept for us though I sprinkled nuts on top so that gave it a roasted nut topping which was really good.

More clothes on the line again today while the sunny days last.  Tomorrow more rain is expected.

Today I am going to be working on the kitchen, doing just that extra bit of cleaning that needs to be done every so often.

Enjoy your Friday and don't forget to give someone a smile.
A smile from me to you.

A story about Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it.
Everybody was sure Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it,
but nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought Anybody could do it,
but Nobody realized the Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody
when actually Nobody asked Anybody.
