Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

My first pie crust

Up, out of the house, in town and walking at 6:30.
A cloudy morning and 31 degrees.
Sunrise was at 7:11 but never did see it with all the clouds.

Walked around town up and down the main road and the side streets.
The ball park and both cemeteries were on my route this morning too.

Went to see the cows at the big barn.
This one has an unusual face with the black below her eyes.
Looks like she didn't wash her mascara off last light! πŸ˜„

The corn is still around and getting kind of rough looking now.
It is shrinking so that I can look over the top of it.

Sure was quiet around town this morning.
No one around - like a Sunday morning.

A few house chores got done and then I made another batch
of the Welsh Cookies for the Drane house sale next Saturday.
Still have one more batch to make and will do that next week.

Making a pie crust the other day got me to thinking
of the first time a made a pie crust.
It's a bit of a story.

I must have been about 14 and my mom called me from work
and told me to make a pie crust.
Told her I had no idea how to.
Mom said just look it up in the cookbook, it's easy
you'll have no problem.
So I got out the cookbook and gave it a try.
Got the ingredients mixed and in a ball.
Now I was ready to roll it out.
How hard could it be.
I rolled it out nice and big and then I had a problem.
How to get it off the counter.
I had rolled it so hard without enough four that it was stuck.
Ended up SCRAPING it off the counter and was so frustrated with
it that I threw the whole mess against the backsplash
thinking, oh boy my mom is really going to be mad at me.
So I called my Gramma (dad's mom) and explained what happened.
Very calmly she talked me through the process reminding me to
use more flour and to roll from the center out.
It worked and I put the crust in the pie plate, cleaned the backsplash
and when my mom came home there was the pie crust nicely in the pie plate.
She never knew my gramma helped me.
I think of my gramma when I make crust now and it always makes me smile.

That's it for today.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Karen. That is an interesting memory that you have of getting a little help from your grandma to make the pie crust. That story also goes along with the quote you have at the end. I hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend. See you again soon!

...when I was a kid I made pie crusts and rolled it out between two sheets of wax paper. It worked well, but now I buy crusts at ALDI.

Loved the story of your first pie crust! Your Gramma was a treasure. Not long after we were married I wanted to make mashed potatoes but wasn't sure how to do it, so I called my grandmother (my mom's mother) because she made THE BEST mashed potatoes. She told me what to do and they turned out well. But then she called my mom and wanted to know why I had to call her to find out how to make mashed potatoes. πŸ˜‚. See what I mean about your Gramma being a treasure? πŸ˜‰

I love that memory! I was just telling my daughter the other day that the first time I made a cake there were egg shells in it. My Dad ate it and said it was good - but teased me about it when I got older!

I like your pie crust story. Nice that it ended well. My first one didn't turn out and ended up being thrown out.

Love your pie crust story. I never could make a good one. I don't think it was so much the recipe or mixing the ingredients as much as it was the rolling it out. I should have called my grandma.
