Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

A kindness goes awry

A chilly day today. It never made it out of the 60's and it was windy, cloudy and then it finally rained.

As usual I went for my morning walk and walked 7.7 miles - though I didn't mean to walk that far. I was just about home and ran into Lin who was out for her morning walk. She has been out of town for quite a while so we had a lot of catching up to do so I just continued walking around town with her. As we were walking an older woman carrying a few shopping bags was walking up ahead. Lin told me that when she was walking home from Weis earlier she saw this woman and stopped and asked the woman if she would like some help carrying her shopping bags home. The woman gave her a look and said "Mind your God D*** business. Leave me the hell alone." Wow what a surprise coming from a little old lady!! Lin said a simple No thank you would have done. So much for her act of kindness!

Not much happening today. I was going to clean but just couldn't get in the mood. So I played around on the computer, read and knitted. I didn't even go to out to try to find a dress for tomorrow - I'll just make due with what I have. Maybe instead of the pants I was going to wear, I'll wear my black skirt, a white shirt and my boots.

Ken just went off to his mosaic glass class. This is the second class - so far he really likes it. We went to a glass shop in Kensington one day this past week which was a really cool place and he bought a few pieces of glass of different color blues and a red piece. I'm looking forward to seeing what he creates. The shop has so many different kinds and colors of glass that it was hard choose what to pick.

We will have our ice cream later tonight when Ken gets back home and probably watch another Veronica Mars show. Until then I will read some more of my book. I'm reading Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich.

I hope your Thursday was a happy one. :-)

Okay then, Blogger wasn't allowing comments just a minute ago. LOL!

Your story about the old woman reminded me of an old woman who lived in my former neighborhood. One day there was an ice storm and she was out walking on the sidewalk and had slipped and fallen at least twice that I had seen. I walked the length of my veranda to offer her help and a place to stay until someone could come get her. She told me to leave her alone, too, and she knew me albeit only a little. Guess old ladies know what they want. Anyway, off she went slipping and sliding all the way. I've often thought that that experience was a lesson to remember in my future...not to be so independent when I need help.

Last winter we had an older lady that was living in her car and she would park in the restaurant parking lot in the later part of the evening. We would take her out hot chocolate, coffee, sandwiches. One night in particular we brought her into the restaurant because weather forecasts were warning of the dangers of the extreme cold that we were experiencing. The next night I went out to talk to her about some resources that I was aware of that could provide her shelter and food. She promptly told me to mind my f--king business, to leave her alone, that her situation was only temporary. We never saw her in our parking lot again. I often wonder if she is okay and survived the cold winter that we had last year. If I had it to do all over again, I would offer her help again.

I have heard of this happening with dementia or alzeimer patients -- perhaps she just wasn't herself...
