Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

Newspaper article from 1943

It was 17 degrees this morning and windy with snow showers.
I decided not to walk in town because thought there might
be some slippery places.
There would be a time when that wouldn't have mattered but
now that I'm older I don't want to take the chance of falling.
So had to make due with walking loops around the basement.
I lift some light weights and do stretching exercises three
times a week and did that too.

Last week when I was looking for those old pictures on a DVD
(which I never found)
one of the things I came across was this article from a local
NJ newspaper from July of 1943
about my dad and his two brothers.
All three of them were in the Army at the same time.
My dad is Robert, the one in the middle.
Must have been a worrying time for Gramma!
After my dad's furlough he was sent to England.
Jimmy Steward was the commanding officer at the base he was at.

Since it is Veteran's Day thought it would be a good time to post it.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Thanks to all the veterans past and present
in all the services who served. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Hope you had a wonderful Tuesday.

I think you were wise to walk indoors around the basement.

Thank you for sharing the newspaper article, it must have been very worrying for Gramma to have all three boys serving in the army at that time.

On this important day ... we will remember those past and present both in the US and worldwide who served.

All the best Jan

Dear Karen, we got a lot of snow here in Montreal! And the Montreal transit workers are still on strike, which you can imagine is making things even more chaotic! I stayed in for the last couple of days because it is safer. Many people still don't have their snow tires, and crossing the street can become a hazard, as you never know how long the car may have to slide in order to stop.
I got a lot done, though, so it's all good. It's a beautiful winter wonderland.
God bless and honour all our veterans who fought for the freedom we have today.

I had one son in the army and can't imagine having 3 in at the same time. Very cool about having Jimmy Stewart as his commanding officer.

Hi Karen. I totally agree with you about falling. We have to be careful as we age. Your father and his brothers were handsome and brave and helped fight evil and preserve freedom. I am very grateful for men such as they from so many families across our nation.

It is nice you kept that newspaper article on your father and his brothers. I am thankful for all our veterans. I would be afraid of falling too, walking indoors is ok. Take care, have a great day!

I can imagine how frightening that was for your grandmother having three of her sons off serving their country

Karen, thank you for sharing the newspaper clipping you found of your dad and his brothers. That had to be a trying time for so many mothers. My parental grandmother had two of her sons in the service at the same time during that same time period. We have so much to be thankful for because of how those men fought to keep us free.

Wow, how cool to have that clip from the newspaper about your dad and his brothers. Grateful for all the men/boys who served in WWII and other battles, too. I can't imagine sending our boys off to war. Great post for Veterans day. Smart to not walk when ice is a concern.

Now that you're walking in the basement we need some new pictures of that train layout!

A great post! Handsome young soldiers going off to war. Thanks to them and to so many others. I can only imagine the long days and nights that your grandmother and all the other mothers spent worrying about their sons. My dad was also a WWII veteran.
