Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

The Windmill

A beautiful morning for walking.
55 degrees and sunny.
Morning Walk Steps

Walked around both cemeteries first and then the ball park.
Continued down the main road toward home but turned off and
walked up Sale Barn.
Quite a trek up the hill,

but a nice walk down the hill.

Walked back to town and up and down a couple of side streets
and then back to the Jeep.

Rebecca was out walking Leo and also saw
Ruth Ann walking her two dogs.
Town Worker Bill was out and I stopped for a little chat with him.
GrannyM commented a few days ago how she didn't see any
litter around town.
That's thanks to Bill who keeps our town neat and tidy.
I thanked him today for doing just that.

Yesterday Ginny asked about the windmill in yesterdays post
and if it had a story.
Yes, it does.

Quite a few years ago now we were living in Savage, MD
and my mom was visiting us for a couple of weeks.
At that time Savage Mill had some antique shops in it and
my mom and I went there to have a look around.

When we walked into one of the shops the windmill was sitting on the counter.
It is a music box and it was playing a tune that I remember
my mother singing to me in Dutch when I was a little girl.
My mom started singing the song and I knew I just had to have this windmill.
It was too expensive for me to buy so my mom paid for half of it
and I got to take it home.

These are the words.  Spelling might be wrong because my mother wrote it down
phonetically.

The Windmill

Oh by the windmill
The beautiful windmill
There is a girl that I love very much
Oh by the windmill
The beautiful windmill
I will live there when you become my wife.

The Windmill is dated 1922 and was made in Holland and the music box is Swiss.

The story that goes with it is that it was carried by a Jewish family fleeing Nazi forces from Germany to Holland and eventually to New York.

Hope you enjoy the little video.
The blades no longer go around.

Your town does always look so neat. Bill does a good job!
I love the windmill story. My Dad used to say some things in Dutch, but never a song.
The wedding picture is beautiful. I'm assuming the sisters had a double wedding?

What a lovely story about the windmill, Karen. So special. Music boxes from Switzerland are so beautiful. Carroll and I brought back a couple when we went to Switzerland.

On the west side of our state we have windmills. The Dutch came over to this area. The tulip festival is amazing each year. Janice

What a wonderful story! The windmill is sure an important piece of history. It is as one of a kind treasure. Your Mom was Dutch? The song is lovely, I have not heard it before. I think most of us have things in our homes that would be so interesting to post, but we have gotten used to them and don't even think of it. Your mom was beautiful!

Forgot to say, in your first two beautiful photos, the golden color of the sky and the ground match each other!

I now love the story as much as I like the windmill...what sweet memories it has for you. And the telling of it enriches our lives.

Like Rose commented...the story is as lovely as the windmill. I listened to the sweet music; thank you for that little video. And thank you for answering my question about the litter;

The windmill holds such dear memories. I enjoyed your little video. It's amazing that the music box still works after all these years. So often they seem to get overwound and no longer play.
Your mom and her sister sure do look alike.

Wow what a treasure that windmill is. The original owners fleeing the Nazis and then you and your mom each purchasing half of it really makes it a priceless heirloom.

Love the photo of your mom and aunt on a happy day!
