Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

Day Eleven of Thanks

Giving Thanks Post Day Eleven
Veterans

I am so very thankful for the many many Veterans
who have served in the military
so we all can live free here in this still great country.
I thank you all for your service.
God Bless you.

A special thank you for the Veterans in my family.
My grandpa in the army WW1
My dad and Ken's dad in the army WW2
My step dad in the Navy in Korea
Four of my uncles
Ken 20 years in the Navy
     ⚑
There is another thing I am thankful for today.
I have a small collection of music boxes and one more was added to it today.  : )
I got a package in the mail from my blogger friend Karen.
It was this music box that plays Brahms Lullaby.
Thank you so much Karen, I love it.
Included in the box was a lovely card
and some of her delicious cookies.
Every one is a little work of art.
I've had the pleasure of eating them before and
they taste as good as they look.

Brahms Lullaby

Original German
Guten Abend, gute Nacht,
mit Rosen bedacht,
mit Näglein
besteckt,
schlupf′ unter die Deck!
Morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
wirst du wieder geweckt.

Guten Abend, gute Nacht,
von Englein bewacht,
die zeigen im Traum
dir Christkindleins Baum.
Schlaf nun selig und süß,
schau im Traum ′s Paradies.

Literal English translation
Good evening, good night,
With roses covered,
With cloves adorned,
Slip under the covers.
Tomorrow morning, if God wants so,
you will wake once again.

Good evening, good night.
By angels watched,
Who show you in your dream
the Christ-child′s tree.
Sleep now blissfully and sweetly,
see the paradise in your dream.
Traditional English version
Lullaby and good night,
With roses bedight,
With lilies o'er spread
Is baby's wee bed.
Lay thee down now and rest,
May thy slumber be blessed.

Lullaby and good night,
Thy mother's delight,
Bright angels beside
My darling abide.
They will guard thee at rest,
Thou shalt wake on my breast.

Yes, I'm so thankful for our veterans. My dad was Air Force in the Korean War and my oldest son was in the Navy onboard the USS Coral Sea during the Gulf War.

I do not have a background of family serving in the military; however, I am well aware of the sacrifices made by many and am truly thankful for all our veterans. How neat that you included the three translations for Brahms Lullaby! I love music boxes, too, but that's one thing I've never collected.

Hello Karen,

I am very thankful for the veterans who have served our country. Freedom is never free and I am thankful for those who have fought to keep our freedoms...some giving their lives.

I love your music box. I love that you included three translations of the verses to Brahm's Lullaby.
The cookies look delicious. What a thoughtful gift!

Those cookies look almost too good to eat. How nice that your blogging friend send you such a lovely gift. I totally agree with you about Veterans and those who serve and am certainly grateful for them too!

From what I know, none of my immediately family served in a war. My dad was almost drafted for Vietnam but time ran out. My brother is still in the army since he was like 17 I think. He was lucky he never got sent to Afghanistan or Iraq. I gave some thought about going into the Air Force, but for many reasons I knew the military was not for me.

What a lovely package! I'm so happy to see the words to that lullaby. I've been singing my own made up words to that tune as I rock my baby to sleep. It's fun to now know the actual words to it.

The literal translation is more meaningful, I think. You have a wonderful lot of Veterans in your family!

Those cookies are amazing looking! I wonder how she does that!

Yeah - three cheers, and more, to all of the veterans who have served honorably and sacrificed so much!

Pretty music box!
