Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

✼     ✼     ✼     ✼
Another great morning for taking a walk.  A few degrees warmer today at 52 degrees.  There was a little fog around at first but it quickly gave way to all sunshine with just a few clouds.
I had a random walk all around town.  I'm walking up to one of the cemeteries here and you can see Peggy and her dog Saxon walking ahead of me up there.  You might have to enlarge the picture to see them.
I saw a deer up at the other cemetery in town.
I walk past this pretty tree with lots of orange berries on it every morning. I think it is a mountain ash and it is in one of my neighbors front yard.
A close up of the berries.
A couple farmers rode through town, one on a tractor, the other on a huge piece of farm machinery that I have no idea what it is called.  Both of them waved to me.  They looked familiar but I don't know them.

I happened to walk past the dentist office just as Dr Allen was arriving and we stopped for a little chat.  She mentioned how pretty the daisies in the yard looked and I told her to feel free to come a cut some for the office any time.
Walked home from there which is only a block away.

I walked 6.3 miles and on this last day of July I found a dime.
The total coins for the month of July is 47 cents.
A quarter, two dimes and two pennies.

I had enough of puttering around the house the last few days so this morning I went up to Happy Trails with Ken and got another load of stone and dirt.  I helped some but also walked around on the trails too.  So peaceful and quiet up there and so pretty.
After bringing the one load home, I stayed home and Ken went back for another one.

I cut some daisies, put them in a mason jar and walked over to the dentist office to give them to Dr Allen.  Even though I said she could come and cut some I figured she probably really wouldn't.  She was very thankful as was everyone else in the office.
I was surprised to see Michele and her 6 year old son sitting in the waiting room of the dentist.  She is the former owner of our house.  Her and her husband moved to New Mexico last year when they sold the house to us.  Missed it living in this area so have just moved back a couple of weeks ago!!  They now live in the next town over.  She asked if she could stop over the house and see all what we've done to it in the last year and I said sure.  She said they'd be over when they left the dentist and sure enough her and Shane came over and I gave them a tour of her old house.  Michele said she liked all what we've done and was so glad that I loved the house as much as she did.

Seems like we haven't been out to eat for a while so we are going out for pizza this evening.  Not Brenda's this time but to Mountain State Brewing Company.  They make brick oven pizza.

Hope your day is a happy one and that

Home again

This just caught my eye walking by
✼     ✼     ✼     ✼
Another chilly morning.  49 degrees but it was sunny.  I can't remember a summer that I had to wear a sweat shirt walking in the morning. It was sure nice walking weather but sure doesn't fee like summer.  I could take these kind of mornings year round.
I woke up late this morning and didn't get out for my walk until 7:15.  I had a random walk all over the place.

Saw a few school buses around town this morning.  Don't know why, school doesn't start for another month.  Maybe summer school.

Didn't see any other people walking around.
Lots of rabbits around which is usual and birds too.

I liked how the old tree branch looked among the Queen Anne's Lace.
I walked 6.2 miles.
✼     ✼     ✼     ✼
I was starving by the time I got back home so made pancakes for breakfast.  Didn't have any strawberries but my pancake was good anyway.

Ken made yet another trip up to HT to get another load of rock and dirt.

I've been home again today just puttering about inside and out.  I've done laundry, dusted, and moved some things around inside.  Outside, I've walked around the yard, weeded, helped Ken a bit and then sat and watched him.
It's been sunny and in the low 70's.  A lovely day.

This is a petunia in my yard.  I grew it from a seed and I think is so pretty.  Looks more like a rose or carnation. I think it is called a 'double petunia.'  I planted a whole package of seeds and only a few came up.

Home all day

One of Farmer Bill's garages
✼     ✼     ✼     ✼
A nice crisp morning after all the rain.  49 degrees with some sun and clouds.  Walked to the library to drop off a book in the book drop and then walked the Farm Loop and around town.

In one of the fields was a whole slew of geese and I walked passed the family of killdeer who ran away from me instead of flying.  I always get a kick out of them running like that.   Down by the barn that I've taken quite a few pictures of, I saw a deer and her two young ones.  I was quite a ways away when I took the picture because knew they would run if I got any closer.
The building where the tractor dealer used to be out on the main road has had a For Lease sign on it since just after the holidays.  Walking past it this morning I noticed the sign is gone and there is some work going on in the building.  I wonder what will be opening up there.  Hope it's something good.

Nice being outside walking this morning.
I walked 6.2 miles.
✼      ✼    ✼     ✼
I went outside for a while to do a little more weeding and to see how Ken was getting on with the patio.  He has the step up to the patio finished.  I'll wait until you can see more progress before posting a picture.  Ken is planning a small water feature incorporated in there too.

I've been inside this afternoon puttering about the house.  I'm going to start reading The Purchase by Linda Spalding which is the next book club selection.

It's been pretty chilly all day.  We sat on the porch eating lunch and I had to wear a sweatshirt.
Hope your day is a happy one.

Monday

Sunny flowers on a rainy day
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
We had thunder storms late yesterday which continued through the night.  There was a tornado watch and we could see the clouds moving in two directions in the sky and it looked pretty threatening but thankfully no tornado.

This morning it was just cloudy when I first started walking and 60 degrees.  It wasn't long into my walk before it started raining and I got pretty wet.  It's summer though and I don't mind getting wet and it is better than carrying an umbrella.  I walked the Farm Loop and around town. The woman in the red car (turns out is Farmer George's daughter and lives next door to her dad) that I see most days walking the FL stopped, rolled her window down and asked if I wanted a ride.  Of course I told her no but thanked her for asking.

I saw the a big milk tanker truck over at the dairy farm.  After walking past all this time I can't believe that was the first time I've seen one there.

By the time I got back to town the rain had stopped and I could see a few breaks in the clouds.  It was windy too and I was almost dry by the time I was back home.

Didn't see any one else out walking.
I couldn't get my camera to turn on so couldn't take any pictures.  The picture above is one I took the other day.
I walked 6.6 miles.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
When I got home Ken said I should check the batteries in my camera but the batteries were good ones so I didn't think that was the problem.  Ken took the batteries out anyway and put they very same ones back in, and wouldn't you know, the camera works again.  Crazy!!

It's been raining on and off all day and has stayed cool.

I did some things around the house and went outside to weed in-between the rain showers.  Ken has been up to Happy Trails a few times getting fill for his patio project.

Also finally finished another book.  Haven't spent much time reading lately.  I've finished Gunpowder Green by Laura Childs which is number 2 in the Tea Shop Mystery series.

That's it for today.
May your day be happy and bright even if its raining.

and they shall never perish,
neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

Have a wonderful and blessed Sunday.

Starting the patio

Thistle
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
I wanted to post this picture of the turtle yesterday but forgot about it so here it is now.  We saw at least 6 turtles come up to take a look at us as we kayaked by.  Lots of these grasses growing in certain parts of the lake nearer the shore line and the turtles seemed to like.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
It was 62 degrees this morning with clouds and sun.  I walked one of my partly around town, partly out of town routes.

I saw Peggy walking her dog Saxon and another woman who I see often walking her dog too.

The usual rabbits were around and I saw a deer.

I think this is a pretty garden that I see walking around the ball park loop.  I like the bird house right in the middle of it.
I walked 6 miles.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
Ken started laying stone for the patio.  He started right at the back door of the garage and blended it in with the stepping stones that were already there.  The  stones are already firm when you walk on them but Ken will put smalls stones and stone dust  between the cracks.  He has a long way to go but I think it will look terrific when he's done.  The next step is to get some fill so he can make a step up to the height that the patio will be.
I spent the morning baking chocolate chip cookies.  I always bake a double batch but today I doubled what I usually make.  100 of them will go to the kids for the snack at Sunday school.  The other 35 are in the freezer.
100 Cookies
The teens from church had a car wash down in the parking lot of Walgreens so after lunch we headed down there so they could wash the truck.

When we got back home I still had lots to do around the house and Ken took the trailer up to Happy Trails to get a load of dirt and that's where he is now.

We plan to have hot dogs on the grill tonight with watermelon for dessert.

Hope your enjoying your Saturday and you smiled often.

A day of kayaking

Dead Trees in the sun
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
It was 48 degrees this morning with some low hanging clouds around at first.  It warmed up pretty quickly though, the clouds drifted off and then I had a sunny walk.

Walked the Farm Loop and then up Spear Road a bit.  Also walked up by the small industrial park.  Got all my miles in before I got back to town.  I'll probably have a walk around town after supper.

A quiet walk and I didn't see any one else out walking.
I walked 6.2 miles.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
Right after breakfast we loaded up the kayaks in the back of the truck and took off for a kayaking adventure.  There is a state park with a pretty large lake near our church that we pass every week and we decided to check it out.

It was really nice and we had a great time paddling around taking in the sights.  I took lots of pictures and had a hard time narrowing them down to these to post.
The 'picture of the day' I took at the lake too.  Down the narrow part.

We crossed the lake and then just went around the whole thing.
 A beaver house.
Bird house with for a big bird.
At one end of the lake was a little beach for swimming and up at the other end here at narrow part it twisted around and around and it was fun following it.
This is a far as we could go and then we turned around and went back.
The weather was perfect, sunny and in the 60's.  We sure did enjoy the day.

Hope your Friday has been a good one too and that you smiled often and maybe even had a good out loud laugh.

Good Fences

My Good Fence #4
Linking up with Good Fences this week again.  If you want to post one or see more fence pictures click HERE.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
60 degrees this morning and cloudy.  Walked around town and then up Barn Sale Road.  I'm on my way down the road here with about a quarter of the way to go to the main road.  Quite a trek up the hill but nice walking down.  You can see some black dots down there on the right
which are steer (learned that is what I should call them and not cows) and here they are close up as I walk by.  The one in the back on the left was really mooing loudly and I got the impression he wanted me to keep going.  I felt sorry for the one in front which seemed to have a million flies on her.
Walked around town some more and then made my way back home.
I walked 6.2 miles.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
Glad I went to church last night.  We saw a beautiful rainbow on the way that lasted almost till we got to church.  For a time there was a double rainbow.  It was a full arc  and I could even see the rainbow color on the trees.  Tried to take a picture through the car window but it didn't come out.

Baked some cookies first thing this morning so I could take some to Cherry Hill late this morning.  Have to bake more for Sunday too for the kids snacks at Sunday school.  I wonder how many chocolate chip cookies I've baked in my life. : )

Today at Cherry Hill I was talking with Ruth and told her what a nice smile she had.  Her answer with a laugh was, "It's my false teeth, and the are loose and sometimes fall out."  My reply was, "You don't just use your mouth to smile, your eyes smile too."

After lunch I tackled ironing some shirts which I have let go again.  Last time I said I was going to do the ironing as I washed them when I only have one or two to iron.  But here I am with having to iron 11 shirts again.  Maybe next time will be different. : )
Ironed eight of them and then went outside to do some more weeding.  I'll do those last three later this evening.

Now it's time for supper.

It's been a cloudy day with just a little bit of sun and a cool day as well with temperatures in the high 60's.

Hope your day has been a happy one and you smiled often.

Weeds and deck work progress

Field of wild flowers
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
Mostly cloudy this morning with a bit of sunshine and 60 degrees when I set out walking.  Got rained on just a bit while the sun was shining and was dry again in no time.
I walked up and down the two hills behind my house and then headed down the main road towards Happy Trails.

Got a chuckle out of the newly painted double yellow lines on this dead end street where just a few people live.  Hardly ever meet another car.   Happy Trails is up on the left.  I turned around here and headed back to town.
Lots of pretty weeds line the road where I walked today and I couldn't resist snapping a couple of pictures of them.

On the way back to town on the main road the speed limit is 55 which turns to 40 as you near town and through town it's 25.  A lot of days radar is set up so we often see people getting tickets.  Today I saw a pickup truck moving along pretty fast and didn't slow down for the 40 or 25 zones.  He didn't have to go through a speed trap to get caught though because a police car was right BEHIND him.  Yup, he got pulled over and got a ticket.

I walked around one of the cemeteries and the loop behind the ball park and headed home.

I walked 6.4 miles.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
I did my morning house routine chores this morning while Ken went outside to work on the deck.  I went out to do minor help by collecting the nails.
Progress went great this morning and this is what it looks like now.
In this photo I noticed I'm reflected in the window standing on the picnic table.
Here's some stone that Ken has collected and put them in neat piles.  We still need many, many more.
We went out in the afternoon to do a few errands and stopped in to see Mr Harvey.  Unfortunately he was out of the building at the time at a doctors appointment.  We'll have to go another day.

When we got home we sat out on the front porch for a little while and read.  We had a light rain shower but not enough to send us inside.  I love that summer rain on the cement smell.

I don't usually go to church on Wednesday nights but Ken does once in a while.  I decided to go tonight and will probably will from now on.  A series on The Beatitudes started last week which I would like to hear.

Hope your day has been a happy one and you smiled often.

A day outside

Up close cone flowers
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
64 degrees this morning with some sun and clouds.  Walked first to the laundromat to hang up a poster for a church event, then dropped off a Netflix in the slot at the Post Office.  Then I was off walking around the Farm Loop.  There are lots of milkweed plants along the road up past the farms.
There were a whole slew of black birds down by the farms too.  There must have been a hundred of them.

Evalena was sitting out on her new deck and I stopped and we had a nice little chat.

Made a pit stop at home and then walked up the hill behind my house, over to the ball park and around the loop there and back home again.

I walked 6.3 miles.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
We've been home today outside in the yard.  It sure felt like summer today here.  But still, it was only in the 80's but it was a humid.

Ken worked on getting the deck taken apart.  The joists are tough to take apart because they are bolted, screwed, and nailed in places so it is slow going.

I spent the day weeding out by the back shed and made a nice edge around the garden up there.  Took a break and mowed the lawn and then went back to weeding.

It was so nice to come inside and take a shower.  : )

After supper I think I'm going to take a nice walk around town.  He probably won't want to, but I'll ask Ken if he wants to come with me.

Hope your day has been a happy one and you smiled often.

Good Deals

Same farm from last post,
just from another road.
 ✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
Friday night at the auction preview I spotted something that I've wanted for years - a 6 foot church pew.  So I really looked forward to the auction Saturday morning.

There were other things out that were just for sale Friday night and I picked up this picture for only $5.
 ✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
Had my usual walk Saturday morning, had breakfast and we headed off to the auction.  This auction had a complete list of items and they went in order so we knew exactly what time the church pew would be up for auction.  We had until 1:30, so had a while to wait.  There was another auction down the street so we went to check that one out.  Stayed for a little while but didn't get anything.  Then we went back to the other auction.  They had a lot of quilts being auctioned off.  A lot of them went in the high hundreds and some even over a thousand dollars.  We didn't bid on any but they sure were beautiful.  This one was one of my favorites.
Finally they brought out my church pew.  Like I said I've wanted one for years and I've rarely seen the smaller 6 foot ones.  I was willing to spend a good bit of money for this one.  It was perfect for me.  I said a little prayer:  "Please God if I'm meant to have this pew please let it go for a good price."
Bidding started and no one was bidding,  then someone started with $40, another person went to 50 and then they went back and forth a while.  Then Ken jumped in when the one bidder stopped and up it continued to go $10 at a time.  At $170 it ended with our bid and the pew was ours.  : )  Very surprised it went for that price - thought it would go for much higher.  Thank you God, I got my pew. : )
The pew had a few scratches in it, (you'll probably have to enlarge to see the scratches)
but with some Old English Scratch Cover it was beautiful.
A feature which I really liked was the cross carved in each side.
The pew now sits in the foyer and on it a quilt that Ken's mom made for us
and my Bible.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
Late Saturday afternoon in the rain we headed up to Chester and Linda's to play some shuffleboard.  The rain didn't matter because the shuffleboard was on an enclosed patio right next to the house.  There were quite a few couples there and only a few people had played before.  We all had a ball.  Lots of laughter, good food and just a fun time.  Once again I am so thankful for our church family who are becoming  good friends too.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
This morning it was a cloudy morning and the temperature was 65 degrees.

Walked over to Public Works and put the water bill in the slot and then over to the Post Office and mailed a few things off in the mail slot. Then I walked around the Farm Loop and then around town.

Walking past the wooded area I heard something in the trees.  It was probably a deer but it seemed to be making a lot of noise and I thought maybe it was a bear so I just sang a song and continued walking. : )

I didn't see any other people out walking.
I walked 6.4 miles.
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
Today we went to do food shopping at Walmart.  We went to the one in La Vale because we had to stop in at Rite Aid which is in Grantsville and on the way to La Vale.

Stopped in a couple of other stores too while we were there.

The sun came out soon after I got back from walking and it has been a nice day, but it has just starting raining now.  I'm sure the sun will be out later once again.

Looking forward to going to Brenda's tonight for pizza.  It's been a while since we had a pizza there.

Hope your day is a good one and that you smiled often.

Ken, the bus driver : )

Looking through the trees
✻     ✻     ✻     ✻
50 degrees this morning with a mix of sun and clouds.  It was a random walk for me today all over town and down the main road towards HT.  Pastor Grant picked Ken up in the church bus while I was walking and passed by me.  I turned around and snapped this picture.  There they go.
I didn't see anyone else out walking.
Up by one of the cemeteries I saw a blue bird.  Don't see many of them and when I do it always makes me smile.
Remember Lone Chicken and friends?  I passed where she used to live and the coop is all over grown now.   I wonder how she is doing in her new home.
It was a nice cool walk and I walked 7 miles.

Ken drove the bus home.  He is now a licensed bus driver!!  : )  Thanks for your prayers and good wishes everyone, and Thank You God!!

I made two dozen chocolate cupcakes with chocolate icing this morning.  Late tomorrow afternoon we are going to a couples house from church who have invited people over to play shuffleboard and I'm bringing cupcakes.  I'm bringing one dozen and keeping the other dozen and I'll have one for my snack tonight.  Something to look forward too.
I've never played shuffleboard before but it sounds like fun.

This afternoon I spent outside doing some more weeding.  This time in the front by the daisies.
My herb garden is doing okay, but not great.  The basil is coming along good and so is the sage and parsley but the dill is very thin looking.  There are a bunch of tomatoes on Ken's plants but they are small and are all green yet.  Pumpkin plants are getting big but no pumpkins yet.  Our two pepper plants are doing good and we are looking forward to frying them up with some hot Italian sausage.  I know, not very healthy but sure good. : )

Ken was out in the back taking more of the deck apart.

Well, it's time for supper and then we are off to preview items for an auction that is being held tomorrow.

Hope your Friday has found you smiling often.

A few degrees cooler than yesterday morning it was 52 degrees this morning when I walked.  There was a mix of sun and clouds and no breeze today.

I walked the Farm Loop and then around town.  I don't know what is growing in this field next to the corn but I thought it looked pretty with the golden tops.
A little farther down the road I saw a deer standing on the side.  When he spotted me he ran off a ways, then stopped to look at me.  I then took a picture.  He was pretty far off so I zoomed in.  I see a round sore or something on his side which looks like a bullet hole.  It must not be though because he wouldn't be running around.
Back in town Sharon, who is in my book club and a neighbor three doors down was having a yard sale and I stopped to say hi.  I was surprised that so many people were there already buying stuff.  A man I have seen and talked to on my walks was there too and I learned that his name is Lee.  He asked me if I've seen any walnut trees on my 'morning journeys' as he calls my walks.  Had to tell him no, but I hadn't really looked for any either but would keep my eyes open for one.

I walked 6.3 miles.

After Cherry Hill this morning (took along some chocolate chip cookies this time) we had lunch and then headed out to Savage River Reservoir for a few hours of kayaking.  This time we explored the other side of the reservoir.  The weather was cool in the 60's and as you can see, a beautiful blue sky and puffy white clouds.
We went all the way to the end.  We stayed here for a little while watching a young deer run around playing while his mom ate.  Also saw geese, a couple of killdeer, and I think a kingfisher.
We are fascinated by the rocks along the shore line.
What a great afternoon we had.  I could do this every day.

Since I was sitting for those hours my step count was low for the day and I like to have 20,000 by the end of the day, so after supper I went for a little walk.  I first went to the Dollar General to pick up a couple of things.  Dropped them off at the house and then walked around town.

I walked around the little pond in town and stopped to take a picture of this robin sitting on the back of a bench.
These pretty yellow flowers caught my eye too.
It was just a little walk of about 2 miles or so.
When I got home there was Ken sitting on the porch.  He was reading over the book for his test tomorrow.

Sure hope all goes well tomorrow and he finally gets his bus license.   It's just been one thing after another.  He only has to take the driving part this time so all should go well, if the bus doesn't break down again!!  A little prayer would be most appreciated. Thanks! : )

Hope your day was a happy one and you smiled often.

Flowers don't worry about how they're going to bloom.
They just open up and turn toward the light
and that makes them beautiful.

Eileen - No, we just had John for the day. We don't really need the extra help, just was helping the kids out with the auction.  I'll be back to being Ken's helper. : )

Karen and Kim - We are replacing the wooden deck with a stone patio.  The stones coming from Happy Trails.
