Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

Eating out alone

It wasn't quite as hot this morning when I walked 6 miles around the lake. I walked the opposite way than I usually walk and saw different people!

I drove to the library and got another supply of books. I have plenty of books that are my own here at home to read but there is just something about the library that I love and its very hard to leave without taking books with me. I always try to just take one and then I could maybe read some of my own to get my pile down a bit, but it never seems to work out that way.

Then I went to the mall and just walked around. Looked in a lot of stores but didn't buy anything. I'm not really a mall person so I didn't stay very long.

It was lunch time when I left the mall and then I did something that might be hard for you to believe. I went to the Olive Garden and had lunch. The hard to believe part is that it was the first time that I ever went into a restaurant to eat all alone!
When I first walked in I was asked are there two of you? I said No, just me. At the table I was asked if I was waiting for someone. Again I said. No, just me. Being alone you notice the people around you more. A couple of women were talking about some one who had their stomach stapled and could only eat a tablespoon of soup for lunch. The two people next to me had two bowls of the salad and two baskets of bread sticks, soup and then started on their meal. I was leaving by that time.
My server was good, nice and he left me 4 after dinner mints. :-)
I really didn't enjoy eating alone though, and don't think I'd do it again. I feel kind of lonely with everyone else talking and laughing.

When I got home I did a bit of house cleaning and then sat down to start one of my books.

Debbi came over late afternoon and we had a nice visit. We sat out on the deck and had a beer. When it was supper time we walked across the street to the pizza place and had supper. Once back home we talked a little bit more and then she took off for home with the left over pizza for the kids.

Didn't do any baking today and don't have any ice cream in the house so my snack tonight was a small bag of potato chips and a soda.

I watched a little television and knitted.
Now, I'll go and read a bit more before bed.

I hope this Thursday you got to spend time with someone you love.
Happyone :-)

Went to the Giant tonight after dinner. Drove by your house -- no lights on -- thought you may be out walking.

It was interesting to hear about your solo visit to Olive Garden. I have eaten alone in restaurants several times, but I don't particularly like it. Sometimes when I'm out shopping for several hours and get hungry I will be forced to eat alone. I agree it is a bit lonely.

It may feel a bit lonely to eat at a restaurant alone, but when you are by yourself, you are always in good company, HappyOne. Enjoy the day! Art

One of the hardest things for me after my first wife died was to eat alone at a restaurant.

That's a brave thing to do eating alone, but isn't it fun to watch/listen to other people and wonder what they are really like!I like to watch people walking and wonder where they are going or what home is like for them, sometimes I can have a story in my head about them....maybe I shall write as book about them one day! Not really!!!!

It's me again! I have just been watching the news and seeing the bad press that our National Health service has been getting in the USA lately. Just to say that our elderly are treated and age is not an issue as to whether they are given the treatment they need. I would hate you to think that we are uncaring over here! I was horrified to see what has been said about it and love the fact that we don't have to pay for health care seperately. Just felt I wanted to set the record straight!

I often travel with my husband on his business trips and I usually have to eat alone unless one of his clients invited me to accompnay my husband to dinner. Very often I'll buy a take out meal and bring it back to the hotel to eat, but sometimes I go to a casual restaurant and eat alone. I find it helps to have a newspaper or magazine with me or a little notebook to jot down some thoughts. That way I don't feel awkward and it gives me privacy as I don't look lonely.

Isn't it interesting how walking the opposite direction introduces a whole new crowd?

Hi Karen,
When I eat alone I often have a magazine or book with me, unless it's Panera's and I have my laptop. Sometimes when I'm by myself I look at couples that look so unhappy together. That have nothing to say to each other. Then I'm happy that I'm alone. I'm glad you tried it. Olive Garden might not have been the right 'alone' place for you to be. I ate at Momma Lucia alone for lunch the first time I went there and sat near other women that were alone.

I love libraries too. I try to stick to audio books since I know I'll listen to them. I'm still on my Dean Koontz kick.

Sounds like your dinner at Olive Garden was intersting. I have eaten out alone many times. After the first time it is quite nice-relaxing. You never know who may start a conversation with you. I hope you give it another try at a different restaurant. People watching is so much fun, isn't it? Enjoy those library books.

I was divorced for 10 years and didn't go out to eat alone but I would sometimes order and take it home with me.
I know things are not good for you right now. I wish I knew something to say to help. All I can do is pray for you and I will continue to do that.

I always admire those who are able to go into a restaurant and eat alone...I've never tried it and don't think that I ever will. I did attend a movie alone once and have often thought that I would love to do that more often.

Hope that all is well with you and Ken! Miss visiting every day. Thank goodness for a borrowed laptop!
