Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

How we ended up in Accident

 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ   ✞   πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ   ✞  πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

A drizzly rain this morning when I walked.
No wind though and it was 60 degrees.

Very quiet around town with it being Memorial Day.
The only people I saw were 2 fisherman.

Walked around both of the cemeteries and the ball park, all a few times each.
Up and down a few side streets too.

There is something else in happening in town that I can watch the progress on.
A new street is being made and rumor has it that a couple of houses
will be built there.

Starts there on the left

and it goes behind the little cemetery and comes out here.
This cemetery is just a little one along the road.

Or maybe it will be a dead end up there by the digger.

Debby, you asked how we came to live here in our little town of Accident.
I'll try to make it brief but don't know if I'll succeed.

We traveled across the country in an RV years ago and always
had our eye on where we would like to retire.
Boiled it down to wanting somewhere on the east side of the country.
Not too cold and not hot and we wanted a good bit of land.
We checked out land in Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia,
but nothing seemed exactly right.
I could have lived anywhere but Ken had a vision of the land he
wanted and it just wasn't coming up.
We were living in Howard County in Maryland because that's where Ken worked.

Back in 2010 we went on a vacation to Deep Creek Lake.
We rented a house on the lake for a week.
Loved the area and drove around looking things over and thought
how nice it would be to buy some land here.
On one of those drives we ended up driving though Accident about 15 miles or
so away from Deep Creek.
I remember driving though town and loving it.

When we got back from vacation we started looking on line
for property in Garrett County, Maryland.
We found a few properties that sounded promising,
got in touch with a realtor and went to look at them.
Again nothing seemed quite right.
Then we hit upon an 8 acre piece of property in the woods
just out of Accident and we just knew it was the right one.
There was another 8 acres for sale right next to it so we bought that too.
A few years later another 5 acres went on the market so that became ours too
and that gave us our 21 acres.

At first we decided to stay in Howard County when Ken retired.
We had moved to a townhouse in Ellicott City.
We liked being close to restaurants and shopping.
We planned on just going up to our property which we named
Happy Trails on weekends to just get away from the crowds.
We built a tractor barn and were in the process of building a little cabin
just for us to use on weekends.
After Ken retired we were spending more and more time up at
Happy Trails and dreaded going back to the crowds.
We were up here one weekend and I walked into town
and saw a house for sale that was just perfect.
So we put up the townhouse for sale and moved to the house
in town.
We lived in town for 5 years and would go to Happy Trails and
have fun making paths and building the cabin.
Then one day we decided to have a house built on our property.
Ken drew up the plans and we found a builder (Ronnie from church)
and had our house built up here at Happy Trails.
Happy here and never looked back.
David and Liz live in a cabin on our property just
a quarter of a mile up the road
which makes it the perfect place for all of us.

Hope you enjoyed reading about how we ended here.
Thanks for stopping by.
Hope you had a wonderful day.

I was so glad to read some of your history, as when I read your title, I thought you had been in an accident!! I had no idea you had so much land! What all do you grow there? And how much of it is woods, and how much flowers, or vegetables? Is your heat by a fireplace?

I know most of that story, at least dating back to when you bought Happy Trails. It's been a fascinating and inspiring story to follow!

Well, I enjoyed that! So, it was definitely no accident that you wound up in Accident! Thanks for sharing that. I'm sure if I ever drove through, I would probably fall in love with the town, too.

I loved hearing your story of coming to Accident! We never left where we came from......Mr D came in 1946, I made it here in 1960, and here we still are. It's home and we like it.

I really enjoyed reading how you came to live in Accident. It sounds as if you and Ken didn’t just find a piece of land, but slowly found the place where you truly belonged. Happy Trails is such a lovely name, and I can imagine how peaceful it must feel after the crowds.
