Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

Day Ten of Thanks and Hair Cut

Giving Thanks Post Day Ten
Grandmothers

I am very thankful that I knew and had the love of both my grandmothers.
Grandmothers are special people. : )

When I think of what a grandmother looks like I think of my
Grandmother on my mother's side.
A little over weight, with long hair in a braid curled around her head.

She always wore dresses with aprons.
She had a wonderful smile and a twinkle in her eye
when she looked at me.
She knitted many ripple afghans and gave many of them away.

A couple of times when I was very young we lived with her for a little while
in her big old house which I loved.
I remember getting up very early in the morning with her
and having a breakfast of Holland rusk with butter and sugar.

When my parents bought a house it was in the same
town as my grandmother and only 1/2 mile away.
Some years later she sold the house and moved in with us.
I spent many many hours with my grandmother
and have many memories of her.
Sadly there was a rift in the family
and my grandmother moved away and I didn't see
her again till a couple of years later when I was in high school
and saw her one last time in the hospital before she died.
So I did get to say I love you one last time.
My gramma on my fathers side only lived a couple of towns away
and I saw her pretty regularly.
She had white hair with curls which she wore swept up on top of her head.
She made the best apple pie and lemon meringue pie.
She is the one who taught me how to make weave-it squares. : )
I was very close with my gramma and we always kept in touch.
She got to see Ken and I married, and I was the first grandchild to make
her a great grandmother. : )  My two first grandchildren made her a
great great grandmother.
I sat at my gramma's bedside holding her hand when
she was 97 years old and quietly left this world.
She was one of the kindest people I've known and never
had an unkind thing to say about anyone.
I was blessed to know  both my grandmothers and they will always
have a special place in my heart.
I am so thankful that I got to know and love them.

☺     ☺     ☺     ☺
I know some of you have been wanting to see my hair cut.  I'm not crazy about posting pictures of myself but here I am.  You can't really see the streaks in my hair but they are there and I like my hair layered like this.  I will just keep getting it trimmed every couple of months and then finally it will be all gray.
A happy day to you.
happyone : )

Hello, grandmother's are special! I wish my mother lived longer so my son would know his grandmother like I knew and loved my grandmother. Your hair looks cute! Enjoy your day!

How wonderful that you have such good memories of both your grandmothers! I really don't see anything that resembles grey in your hair!

I have many wonderful memories of my maternal grandmother. She used to cut the crusts off my sandwiches and I loved her for it! Cute hair cut. It took awhile for me to get my hair grown out to gray when I stopped coloring it.

You look fabulous! What I like is the soft brown with the gray "highlights." My hair is nearly black with streaks...kinda skunky looking...sigh.

Mostly warm and pleasant memories of your grandmothers. Now I am intrigued by your maternal grandmother's home because you loved it. What made it stand out for you.

Yes, grandmothers are special and praying grandmothers are the most special of all!

I was the youngest son of a youngest son. By the time I was born, my paternal grandmother was so old that our relationship was next to nothing.

Grandmothers are so special. Both of my grandmothers influenced my life, but especially my paternal grandmother. We lived in the upstairs of hers and my grandfather's home and I have so many wonderful memories of growing up on the dairy farm.

I really like your hair, Karen. It is quite becoming.

Such a nice tribute to your grandmothers! Love the new haircut and your more "natural" color. You look great. Yea for going "natural." I don't color mine either. ;-)
