Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

Cows, a horse, and deer

Cow neighbors of Happy Trails
❤     ❤     ❤     ❤
It was a dark and cloudy morning as I head outside for my walk and the temperature was 42 degrees.  I first walked over to the post office to mail the letters I wrote yesterday.  Took a picture so you could see how dark it is at 6:35 in the morning.
Walked around town as usual and then went over to the Drane house to see the horses.  Two of them were out in the field munching on some grass but this one here was near the barn.  As I was walking down the hill she neighed at me and walked over to the fence.  When I got there I stopped to talk to her and give her a pet.  She was fatter than usual and I'm wondering if maybe I'll be seeing a little colt again some time.
Didn't see any one at all outside this morning.
As always I enjoyed my walk.
I walked 6.4 miles.

Right after breakfast we went up to HT.  Mainly so I could take a look at the stairs Ken made out of stone leading from the road by the tractor barn up to the area we are clearing out for the cabin.  He used tree trunks for the hand railing.  I walked up and down the stairs quite a few times.  I think he did a fantastic job.  They are nice and sturdy.
We walked around the property edge making sure our no hunting posted signs were still there as there are hunters on the state land.  I have no problem with hunters, just don't want them hunting on HT.  I tell the deer to stay on HT land where they will be safe. : )  Here is one we saw today.
We were just at HT during the morning and were back home again in the afternoon.  I finished reading the book club book that I got from the library yesterday,  My Wish List by Gregoire Delacourt.  It was just a little book with only 163 pages.  I thought it was very good.  It's about a woman who is married, lives in a small town in France and wins the lottery.  She doesn't tell anyone and makes a list of all the things she could do with the money.  I thought it would be a happy fun little book but it is actually quite sad.

Not a big fan of Halloween but I've got all the Halloween candy sitting in two baskets by the front door all ready for the trick-or-treaters.  All 250 pieces.  I wonder if there will be any left?

I think I'll go and start another book.
Hope your day is a happy one.

I don't know that there are real ghosts and goblins,
but there are always more trick-or-treaters
than neighborhood kids.

Have a great weekend. The stairs look very rustic.

I love the cows, horses and the deer. They are all cute critters. Happy Trail is coming along nicely. we do not see any trick-or-treaters here. The book sounds interesting.. Great photos, enjoy your weekend!

We had about 20 trick-or-treaters tonight, just about the number expected. A mother of younger children on the street organized a "Halloween parade." Rain cancelled the bonfire that had been planned.:-(

Those are some big rocks to manoeuvre into place! If it's sturdy that's what counts! No trick or treaters here; we're too far out in the country I guess. But it's SNOWING at the moment!!

I am not a big fan of Halloween either, although our kids always liked it. This year we opted out and didn't give out candy. Used the money usually spent on candy for something else. I love the rock steps Ken built at HT. So glad you keep the deer safe on your property. Enjoy the weekend.

I start my quiet time with your blog. You make me appreciate the little things in life. I really needed that this morning. Tomorrow it will be one year since my husband escaped ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. I haven't felt well all week. I now realize it's my body grieving. I thot I was ok; but my body knows better.
Thanks.

Hi Happyone, Enjoyed your description of Friday’s walk. Yes, sure dark there at 6:30 … maybe a bit lighter on Monday after we get back to Standard Time. You have a real nice place up there at HT. I am curious about how you keep track of how far you have gone on your walk … do you have one of those devices that records your steps? Thanks for sharing your blog and have a great weekend. John

Good morning dear friend, I always enjoy your thoughts and photos, I feel as though I am walking with you. I truly admire your faithfulness to walking, I will walk for a week or two, and then something will come up and I find that I am soon finding excuses.
Thank you for your prayers for my Mom, she continues to do well, but has long journey ahead.
Blessings,
Sue

Man, you and Ken live in a wonderful area. I was raised in a similar place in Utah but now that places is populated with millions of homes. ... well thousands ... the population is 110,000. All the farms are sold off to developers and the business areas are helter-skelter because the planning and growth weren't controlled. It went from a haven of adventure to traffic, capitalism and people (lots of people). We moved from there in 2011 and our home here is peaceful, away from main traffic and there are farms still around here. Have a lovely start to November Karen, and hope your winter is mild. ♥

I think the dark would tempt me to stay in bed. Do you carry/wear a torch or just rely on your night vision? I think you're right about the horse, if she's friendly then her foal will probably be too. I know that's the case with next door's foals. No trick or treaters here though I still have one pumpkin left in the window.

You really do see a wide variety of furry friends on your walks and at HT. I like that you are looking out for the deer.
I haven't heard of that book, but now you have me curious as to why it was sad. I may have to add it to my list.
