Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

Lemon Squares

I guess you all wouldn't be surprised to hear that I woke up to snow coming down again covering up the ice so another walk in the basement.  Started listening to Rose Harbor in Bloom which is the second book in the series.  It picked up four months later after the first book ended.  Not much to say about my basement walk.  I'm starting to really look forward to spring!! : )
I walked 5 1/2 miles.

I was feeling a bit down this morning.  Got on the scale and saw that I had gained 2 pounds and Ken annoyed me when he was in my way in the kitchen.  I went and sat down in the library, said a little prayer and looked out of the big picture window.  What I saw soon had me in a happy mood once again.  The snow was just kind of floating down in big flakes against the pine trees across the street.  The little tree in the middle of my yard has a bird's nest in it and is covered with snow.  The whole scene looked so pretty - like one of those snow globes.  It just made me feel happy.  I'll lose those two pounds and I was just annoyed with Ken because I was mad that I gained 2 pounds.
I got up out of the chair, gave Ken a hug and we went and had breakfast.

Mid morning when it was still snowing we both went outside.  Ken used the snow blower and I shoveled.  There was still a coating of ice under the snow so the driveway was still icy. When we came back in I felt like baking something again.  Ken said he'd like something lemony so I baked some Lemon Squares.  If you would like the recipe, you can find it HERE.
I read in the Tea Time magazine that Scones are pronounced to rhyme with Gone.  I always thought that it rhymed with Lone.  What do you think is right?

About 2 this afternoon the snow stopped and the sun came out for a while so I went back outside for a couple of hours and chopped off a good bit of the ice that was on the driveway.  The temperature was 28 degrees so it wasn't melting.  It was nice to be out in the sunshine though. : )

I finished reading In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do?" written in 1897 by Charles M. Sheldon.  The novel is about Reverend Henry Maxwell and a challenge he puts to his congregation to not to do anything without first asking themselves, "What would Jesus do?" for one year.  I found the book fascinating and thought it very good.  Sure makes you think.
The book was a gift from Kathy, Pastor Leatherman's wife.  She gave a copy to all the woman who went to the ladies Christmas party.

Hope your day brought you sunshine and happiness.

Today's Three Thankful Things
  1. Seeing the sunshine
  2. That I can make Ken smile and see a twinkle in his eyes just by making  him Lemon Squares
  3. For another day

Comment Replies:
Vee - Oh we both had another one later on.  We just had the 1/2 to taste.  They are sitting out on the counter now under plastic wrap.  I had another one today.  I probably will put what's left in the freezer tomorrow.

It has been a long time since I have baked lemon squares. They were once a regular treat around her. In His Steps really makes one think.
Stay warm and safe!

Hmmm, lemon squares - I'm hungry now! You will lose those 2 pounds come spring, but I know what you mean. We work so hard to stay in shape and then those pounds creep in. It's OK though. Art

My grandmother said "scon" and I say "scone." My personal opinion is that it is a you say "tomayto" and I say "tomahto" thing and that either is correct.

Phew! I am so glad that you had another later on. I was beginning to think that you are both superhuman!

Yup. This winter is going to feel a little longer for you. We are just settling in for the duration. Sigh.

I guess you are in a baking mood now days... that's super!!!
Yesterday I told mom to buy an oven for me so I could make those scones. By the way, can I make them in a normal microwave oven?

I received In His Steps for Christmas and am reading it. It is holding my attention. Your comments make me want to hurry and finish reading it so I can know how things turn out.
I loved the way you got rid of that down feeling. Great job!

I think I remember you saying that the locals said this was a normal winter for your area. But this has not been a normal winter for most of the US ... soooo I will be very curious to see if next year you have more days when you can walk outside.

This little post was just what I needed to read this morning...had kind of a "downer" start to the day myself but you inspire me to pull myself back up! I am going check out that book about Doing what Jesus would do sometime, if the library has it. Sounds very thought provoking. I hope things start to thaw out for you. Winters like yours was a big reason we moved to Arizona, but now we are thinking that one day we may move back to a snowier climate. Go figure. Those lemon bars look good and my husband really likes lemon bars so I may give those a try. Have a good Friday!

Sounds like you have cabin fever Karen....not surprising with all the cold, wind, and snow. Spring will come when it is ready. I don't know what those who don't read, knit, crochet, quilt do in the winter....or any other time for that matter!

Isn't it neat and beautiful how scenes from nature can help us when we're down or in a mood? Like the snow did when you looked out of the big picture window :)

We have both pronunciations of scone here in the UK. Scone/gone is more common unless you have a scottish or a northern accent (Hey up lass.) or if you have an upper class accent when it is scone/stone.
A bigger debate goes on over scones in a cream tea. Does the clotted cream or the jam go on first? People get quite het up over that.
