Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

Slippers once again

Back to misty mornings. Not enough to get me wet, just a bit damp. I walked my 6 miles around the different neighborhoods without going on any particular route. I like to go up and down streets where I've not walked before. Sometimes what looks like a little side street ends up with lots of other streets off of it and I'm amazed at all the houses there are. Its easy to lose your way for a while - which I do! :-) Not many people out on such a dreary morning. I spotted quite a few deer and saw a fox as well. The fox never stays around to get his picture taken. He sees me and takes off like a flash.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a pretty dreary day with drizzle, mist and rain all day.
A good day to stay home and read and knit.
Here are the two pair of slippers for my two youngest grandkids - Scout and Japhy.
Here's the pattern for the slippers if any of you knitters out there want to knit a pair of your own.
Slippers - Basic Pattern
Size 5 knitting needles.
Cast on 41 stitches.
Row 1 - Knit
Row 2 - K15, P1, K9, P1, K15
Repeat these two rows until 13 ridges.
Bind off 6 stitches at the beginning of next 2 rows.
K9, P1, K9, P1, K9
Continue till one inch of desired length.
Toe
Row 1 - P1, K1 all the way across row.
Row 2 - K1, P1 all the way across row.
Do these two rows 3 times.
Cut length of wool for sewing and with sewing needles pull through stitches on knitting needle and pull tight. Sew inside out.
I used size 3 needles and two strands of yarn.
You can make them with one strand and change yarn and needles to the
size you want.
I've used size one needles and baby weight yarn to make tiny slippers too.
Here's a picture of some baby slippers I made a while back.
I've finished one slipper of my own. Here's my foot modeling it.
I finished reading another book in the cat series by Lilian Jackson Braun called The Cat Who Lived High and it is number 11 in the series. I like all of these books.
A good evening for soup so I made some tomato soup and grilled cheese. A nice quick, easy and tasty supper.
I hope you enjoyed your Thursday and you had some happy times.
Karen :-)
Hi Karen,
I enjoy reading your blog very much and wish my husband and I had a great place to walk like you do. We walk to town and back, about 1/1/2 miles.
I am a beginning knitter and would like to try making the slippers.
I noticed in the picture you had two colors of yarn. Is it necessary to use double yarn?
Thanks,
Diane in AL
Diane - always nice to hear of another walker. :-)
I'm glad to hear you enjoy reading my blog.
Yes, one strand of yarn works well too for the slippers. Two just makes the slippers bulkier.
Hi Karen,
Hope your weekend has been great.
I have another beginning knitter question (sigh).
Should I cast on 40 or 41 stitches,
for the K15,P1,K9,P1,K15?
Went out today and got size 5 knitting needles in RED!
Thanks,
Diane
Hope your weekend was a good one too.
I was looking for an easy slipper pattern for my two granddaughters. They are 10 year old twins. I'm going to try to teach them to knit. This looks like an easy pattern. Years ago I knitted slippers and scarves so maybe I can remember how LOL. Also I believe I have read all the Cat Who books, they were my favorite. An older lady friend got me to reading them quite a few years ago, she had most of them, she has since past away but I continued to read all the books. They're great fun. The grilled cheese and soup is also a favorite of ours. I make all kinds of homemade soups, usually one a week in fall and winter. Thanks for sharing your cute pattern. Betty
It's been awhile since I knitted a pair of slippers. That might be a good way to use up some of my leftover yarn. I've read all 'The Cat Who" books but might be time to read through them again as I really liked them.
