Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

A Psalm for Sunday

Psalm 84:5 & 6, and 11 & 12 5. Happy are those who are strong in the Lord, who want above all else to follow your steps. 6. When they walk through the valley of weeping it will become a place of springs where pools of blessing and refreshment collect after rains. 11. For Jehovah God is our Light and Protector. He gives us grace and glory. No good thing will he withhold from those who walk along his paths. 12. O Lord of the armies of heaven, blessed are those who trust in you.
Hope your Sunday is a sunny day. Happyone :-)

A child's laughter

This morning on my walk I came across a mother walking with her son who was maybe 2 years old. It had just finished raining and as they walked she shook a branch of a tree and the water drops fell down on to her son. He thought that was just the funniest thing and ran on up ahead just laughing a big ole belly laugh. It was the kind of laughter that kids do that just makes you have to laugh along with them. It was just so nice to hear and see that. :-)

I got another book read from the stack of books that I got from the library.
A Friend of the Family by Marcia Willett.
Another great book!. Just a well written good story about family and friends. I laughed and cried reading it.

A quote from the book:
'It is better to cut your bare feet on the glass than never to feel the sand between your toes.
You should know that there is no comfort in knowing that you are existing instead of living. For a short while I lived. It was wonderful and agony. Bliss and pain. But I knew that I was living. I can tell the difference. Perhaps the only really contented people are those who have never lived at all. But I keep the painting to remind me that just once I took off my shoes and felt the sand between my toes.'

Cheryl - I put the book South of Broad by Pat Conroy that you recommended on reserve at the library. Take a guess what number I am on the list. 243!!! Isn't that crazy!?

They are still working on a row of 5 houses which are on the right as I walk out my front door. These should be finished in the coming week. This is the last row and I am really looking forward to them all being done.

I've been knitting on both the white squares and the ripple afghan.

The rain so far as not cooled things off as I had hoped. Maybe tomorrow.
It's still early in the day and don't know what the rest of the day will bring.

Hope you are enjoying your Saturday.
Happyone :-)

Rita's Again!!

Another hot and humid morning walk and it just got hotter as the day wore on. Stayed around home during the day and did my usual stuff.

Cheryl called and asked if I wanted to meet her for supper so we met up in a strip mall down the road. We ate at a new place that just opened up. It was around the side and pretty hard to find. It was just a small place where you ordered food at the counter. We had chicken, beans on rice and I had fries and Cheryl tried a new thing that I never heard of called Yuca ( pronounced with a long u) which looked and tasted like french fries. It was VERY WARM in the place without air conditioning on this hot day. The food was good but I wonder how long they will stay in business!

We then walked around in the new Ollies - a big discount store - but didn't buy anything.
Cheryl's daughter works in a Rita's that is in this same strip mall so we went there for dessert. I know, I know, I just had Rita's on Tuesday. :-) I had my usual chocolate custard but I tried a flavor of ice that I've never had before called cotton candy. And it really did taste like cotton candy!! Next time I might try it with vanilla.

While we were walking, guess what I found in the parking lot? A dry wall screw!!

Speaking of dry wall screws in the road, I haven't found any screws or nails around my townhouse for the last couple of days. The town houses at the end of my street are finished.
I took this picture standing on my deck.
I'm glad I live in an end unit because when I sit out on my deck and look out this way, at least I get to see green grass and trees.

Flowers on my deck.
Remember the little rose bush Ken gave me?
It's growing nicely out on the deck.
And this is what my basil is looking like now!
Hope this Thursday was a happy one for you!

The rain

yesterday didn't bring cooler temperatures for us, just more humid weather. It was really hot walking this morning, but I walked my 6.1 miles through the neighborhood on the walking paths. I saw a couple of baby deer and lots of rabbits.

I came across a program on television called Worship Transitions. I don't have cable and it's on channel 66.4 off the air. There was gospel music playing with beautiful pictures of scenery rolling by. On a commercial, their website was mentioned, Worship.net and I went to take a look at it. There is a something there for almost every life situation that you may be in. Some one says a few words and then you hear music with beautiful pictures. I thought it was very nice and inspirational. Take a look if you're so inclined. :-)

Today I finally started on the Paint by Number picture. I'll take a picture of it to post when I have more of it done.

I did my usual reading and knitting and sitting out on the deck.
For supper I walked across the street to the Hunan Legend and ordered Hot Crispy Beef to go. While waiting for it to be ready I struck up a conversation with another woman waiting for her order. We both were waiting for Hot Crispy Beef!! It was delicious by the way and there is enough left for tomorrows supper too! :-)

I watched a movie called Duchess from Netflix which was a sad movie but good. Based on the true story of Georgiana, the duchess of Devonshire.

It's Wednesday already and I hope it was a good one for you.

Pizza Night

A nice morning walk around the lake was the start of my day. I've been noticing that the sun isn't rising as early as it was. Soon I'll be watching the sun rise again during my walks.

Did house work today and also got the basket of shredding done that was over flowing.

It was a quiet day at home again. I got more reading done and started another white sampler square.

I enjoyed the evening going out for pizza with a friend and afterwards we went to Rita's for a gelati. I got chocolate with raspberry lemonade - I think that's my favorite.

We had a thunder storm this evening and got some well needed rain. I did miss sitting out on the deck till dark again though. I love sitting out on the deck watching it get dark.

I was hoping to get another Netflix in the mail today but it didn't come, so I watched a couple episodes of Seinfeld. Since I had a gelati at Rita's I wasn't going to have a snack but I ended up eating a Black and White anyway. I have to splurge once in a while. :-)

I hope this Tuesday was a day of sunshine for you.

A trip to the dentist

The first thing I did today after my walk around the lake was to bake chocolate chip cookies because I had a dentist appointment for 12:00. Just for a cleaning. My dentist is super nice (and a very good dentist) and he has a sweet tooth, so I bring him cookies when I go. Its always nice to see everyone smile as I hand the cookies through the window when I first get there. :-)
A very good day at the dentist!! When I walked back out into the waiting room which had quite a few people in it, I said. NO CAVITIES!! Everyone chuckled.
So, now I'm good until February!!

When I left the dentist I went for a drive before going home. It was nice driving in my car listening to my music!

I started another book, finished listening to All Creatures, and started listening to the audio book Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Its over 18 hours of listening!!

I watched a couple episodes of Seinfeld, had a few cookies and milk for my snack, and then knitted on the ripple afghan. I guess I'll read until bedtime once I get off the computer.

Hope this Monday you made a happy memory.

A few notes from today

Pretty quiet day around the house.
After my morning walk which was my usual 6 miles, I made pancakes for my breakfast.

I have had this paint by number sitting around for quite a while and decided finally to paint it. I didn't actually get around to starting the painting today - I'll start it tomorrow. I haven't done one of these in years and thought it might be fun. If it comes out okay I'll hang it my bedroom where I have started a bird house theme.

I sat outside on the deck until it was getting dark and finished reading another book called The Grand Finale by Janet Evanovich. It was a lighthearted, funny (silly) love story. A very quick read.

Part 2 of Sense and Sensibility was on MPT tonight and I watched that while I had one of the Black and Whites again for my snack. There was an actress in S and S that I knew from some other show and for the longest time I couldn't place her. I kept seeing her much younger and then it came to me - she was Rose from Upstairs Downstairs!

Just about bed time, so I guess I'll read a bit more more I go to sleep.
Happyone :-)
Its not what we say that counts,

Praise Him

Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad. 4. Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face continually.
Have a wonderful Sunday and then thank God for it. Happyone :-)

Baking, knitting and reading

Yesterday I did a bit of baking. I copied a recipe for Black and Whites on Pat's blog.I used to eat these when I was a kid and it was one of my favorite goodies (still is). I liked the chocolate half best, so I would eat the vanilla side first and save the best for last. My mom used to buy them from the bakery and they were a special treat.
My bother-in-law Dennis is a baker and sometimes when we go to Ken's sister's house he brings some from the bakery for me because he knows I like them. :-)
The ones I made are good but not as good as the ones that Dennis makes and his are bigger too. I added up the calories and each one has 217. I ate one right after I made them and had one later too.
I baked bread today which made the house smell sooo good. It was a bit of a challenge cutting the loaf in nice straight slices!!

I got the curtain rod hung up in the kitchen which now holds a blue plaid curtain. I never did find those drill bits, but I got a finishing nail and hammered a small hole for each screw, then hand screwed the four nails in.

I finished reading one of the books from the library, The Cat Who Had 14 Tales by Lilian Jackson Braun which is a book of short stories of course about cats. Some good stories, some not so good but a nice light easy read.

I knitted these two dish cloths yesterday. I like to give them away as gifts and thought I'd start making them for Christmas presents. This is the first time I've used this color and I like it.I also finished another white square for the white sampler afghan while sitting out on the deck. It has turned into a bedspread now. Today I sewed the next 9 squares together to form the 7th row and then sewed that on to the other 6 rows.
I laid it out on my bed and took this picture.I have four more rows to go before I'm finished. I can see the end in sight after all this time. :-)
I listened to All Creatures Great and Small audio book while doing the sewing.

After supper I walked around the neighborhood streets looking for nails and I'm happy to say I didn't find any at all. Then I walked over to the Giant and got some ice cream.
For my snack I only ate half the amount that I usually do because I wasn't all that crazy about the flavor which was Andes Creme de Menthe so I also had a Black and White!

I'm off to read for a while before bed.

I hope you had a happy Saturday.
Happyone :-)
Live in such a way that if anyone should speak badly of you, no one would believe it.

One last thing before I end this post.
Last week I said there were changes in my life for a while. I wasn't going to elaborate but I think most of you have jumped to the wrong conclusion assuming the worst: divorce. So, I am going to say a bit more now and won't mention it again. Our marriage has been good and strong and I believe it will be again. We saw each other today and we talked. We have always talked things through and we will continue to do so. We both believe we will be back together again soon. Ken is thinking about what he wants to do with the rest of his life but he assures me it includes me. Yes, it is hard and I am sad but I am okay. I thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers, believe me they have helped!! And please continue to pray for both of us. We have been married for 37 years and we have weathered a few storms from time to time. This one will pass too.
Don't forget I am Happyone and yes I still am. :-)

Eating out alone

It wasn't quite as hot this morning when I walked 6 miles around the lake. I walked the opposite way than I usually walk and saw different people!

I drove to the library and got another supply of books. I have plenty of books that are my own here at home to read but there is just something about the library that I love and its very hard to leave without taking books with me. I always try to just take one and then I could maybe read some of my own to get my pile down a bit, but it never seems to work out that way.

Then I went to the mall and just walked around. Looked in a lot of stores but didn't buy anything. I'm not really a mall person so I didn't stay very long.

It was lunch time when I left the mall and then I did something that might be hard for you to believe. I went to the Olive Garden and had lunch. The hard to believe part is that it was the first time that I ever went into a restaurant to eat all alone!
When I first walked in I was asked are there two of you? I said No, just me. At the table I was asked if I was waiting for someone. Again I said. No, just me. Being alone you notice the people around you more. A couple of women were talking about some one who had their stomach stapled and could only eat a tablespoon of soup for lunch. The two people next to me had two bowls of the salad and two baskets of bread sticks, soup and then started on their meal. I was leaving by that time.
My server was good, nice and he left me 4 after dinner mints. :-)
I really didn't enjoy eating alone though, and don't think I'd do it again. I feel kind of lonely with everyone else talking and laughing.

When I got home I did a bit of house cleaning and then sat down to start one of my books.

Debbi came over late afternoon and we had a nice visit. We sat out on the deck and had a beer. When it was supper time we walked across the street to the pizza place and had supper. Once back home we talked a little bit more and then she took off for home with the left over pizza for the kids.

Didn't do any baking today and don't have any ice cream in the house so my snack tonight was a small bag of potato chips and a soda.

I watched a little television and knitted.
Now, I'll go and read a bit more before bed.

I hope this Thursday you got to spend time with someone you love.

The Little Bell

Another hot muggy morning for walking. No breeze at all today. I saw the deer and her two babies again. When I walked where I used to live, I would find coins almost every day, in fact over the years I've found almost $200 and keep all the coins in old glass banks that used to contain syrup. I only find money every once in a while since I've been walking here. Today though, I found 2 quarters to add to my banks. :-) When I was a little girl (don't remember the year) I stayed with my grandmother while my mother and father went on a little vacation to Cape Cod. When they came back there was a little bell hanging from the rear view mirror of my father's car that said Cape Cod on it. Over the years that little bell would always be in all of his cars. Every new car he got he would hang that little bell from the rear view mirror. One day he added a little crystal. My father loved to drive - I think that was his favorite thing to do. So when he died I took that little bell with the crystal and hung it on the rear view mirror of my Saturn which was my car at the time he died. Now it hangs from the mirror of my Corvette. My father would have loved my Corvette - I'm only sorry he never new I finally got one. When I'm driving and the little bell rings, I always think of my DAD!! :-) I miss you Daddy!
Today I finally finished reading
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. (973 pages)
It's set in England staring in the year 1123 and ends in the year 1174. There is never a dull moment. One exciting thing after another happens throughout the whole book. I thought it was an excellent story.
I also finished reading I'll Take You There by Joyce Carol Oates.
I find all her books depressing but good. I called my friend Bernice and we had a nice long talk. She has been my friend my whole life. She is the sister I never had and I love her dearly!! :-) Knitted some more on the ripple afghan and now have 12 of the 19 strips done. I watched a Netflix and ate up the last of the chocolate chip cookies for my snack. I hope this Wednesday was a happy day for you. Happyone :-) A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.

Shining through

I took this photo of the sun through the trees this morning when I first walked out the door. No special route today but I did walk my usual 6 miles. Hot and sticky again.

I took my car out today and had no trouble with the road being blocked coming or going. I think the worst of it is over. They finished putting the siding up on the houses at the end of the street and are now working on the decks around the back. The other row of houses are just about done and the last row they just started are ready for the shingles to put on the roof. They will be starting on them tomorrow because the tar paper and shingles are already on the roofs.

I went to Wal-mart and got a few things and walked around. Then went to Lowes and walked around - I bought a curtain and rod for the back door. I had to cut and hem the bottom of the curtain and took off the tabs at the top. The panel only cost $9.99 so I didn't mind fixing it up a bit for the door. I tried putting the curtain rod up but couldn't get the screws started in the door for the brackets. I knew it needed to be drilled first and I found the drill in the garage but couldn't find the drill bits. I tried gluing the brackets up but after a while they started pulling away once the curtain was hanging. I'll just have to find those drill bits!

I did some more reading and should finally finish my book tomorrow.
I played cards again and listened to more of All Creatures. There is still about 2 hours left on the disc.

After my supper of a baked potato and salad I walked down to the mail box again and then walked around the neighborhood like yesterday. Only found one nail tonight!

Did some knitting while watching Netflix and once again had chocolate chip cookies for my snack.

I'll be doing some more reading in a little while when I get off the computer.

I hope you enjoyed your Tuesday and found laughter in your day.
Happyone :-)

Monarch or Viceroy?

While walking around the lake this morning I came across this butterfly. Now in the past I would say that it was a Monarch Butterfly but now I'm not sure. Could it be a Viceroy Butterfly? Carla, if you are reading this, I know you will know! :-)

My friend Lin called me while I was walking and we talked while I walked a couple of miles. We planned to get together to do something - we just don't know what yet. :-)

I went to the commissary today. Not many people there because it was Monday, but that means that the shelves are pretty bare yet from the weekend. I didn't need to get much this time and I didn't have a problem. I got all that I needed. Once again when I returned home it was a trial to get down my street to the garage. Had to wait again for a truck to move out of the way. They are always very nice though so it's hard to complain. They are trying hard to get all the work done. Today they were still working at 7:30 - don't know what time they finally left.

I finished another white square on the white sampler afghan. Here are the latest two I've knitted.

In the last few days I've started playing solitaire again which is something that I haven't done in a LONG time. Today I listened to All Creatures Great and Small audio book while playing.

After supper I walked to the mailbox and then around the neighborhood and once again found a few nails.

I've been watching MPT and last night I saw the first part of Sense and Sensibility. I really liked it and look forward to next weeks part 2.
Tonight I watched Sherlock Holmes - The Adventure of the Creeping Man. It was really corny.

Both nights I ate chocolate chip cookies for my snack. (4)

In a little while I am going to watch, Monarchy, Return of the King. Until then I'm going to read.

It wasn't supposed to rain today, but right now we are having a thunder and lightening storm with lots of rain. We can sure use the rain - I like when it rains at night. It was very hot and humid here today, maybe the rain will cool it down a bit.

I hope this Monday was a good one for you and that it was scattered with laughter and happiness.

Changes

Not a great day for me. My life has changed somewhat for a while but I'm hoping it will be back to normal again soon.

I kept busy today. Started the day with my usual morning walk, and had pancakes for my breakfast. I topped them off with some whipped cream. :-)

I decided to change the living room furniture around and gave the room a good cleaning which took up a good part of the day. Didn't move the book shelves or television, but everything thing else got a new location. I do enjoy a change every so often. It must run in the family because my mother and both of my kids are the same way too.

I had time to read quite a lot of my book and I also knitted. I watched an episode of Touch of Frost and had four chocolate chip cookies for my snack. I've decided NOT to watch any more of In Treatment. It's a pretty depressing show and I'm not even crazy about any of the people.

I think I'll go and do some more reading now.
I hope you enjoyed your Saturday.

Nature Walk

A beautiful cool morning for my walk today. When I first started out I was actually a little chilly.
I took these pictures of some of the wildlife I encountered this morning along the paths.
A white caterpillar
Deer
Two Baby Deer
I guess this is a crayfish, but don't they live in water? No water near where I took the picture though.

Newly whitened cross walks are showing up in places. Must be getting ready for back to school. Maybe people will actually stop for you now with them looking so new and white! Well, SOME people do stop and thanks to all of you who do.

My blocked street. I have to turn right at the street on the right here. I'm glad I was walking by.

What gorgeous weather we are having today. Sunny and low humidity. I stayed home, but didn't get much done except for laundry which was perfect for hanging out the line.

I spent some time on the deck reading and knitting and just enjoying the weather.

I hope your Friday was filled with sunshine too.

Eating out times two

I left the house at 11:15 this morning and drove to my daughter Debbi's house. I had some pretty tight spaces to drive through to get out of my street because of all the construction work going on. I'm paranoid about getting flat tires now too.

Debbi and I went out to lunch today to a place called Grass Roots, (I think that's the name of the restaurant) which is vegetarian. And although I am not a vegetarian they have some great food. We sat outside on the patio over looking the edge of a wooded area. Debbi had soup and a salad and I just had a salad. We splurged and shared a dessert - Silky Chocolate Pie. It was as good as it sounds. The piece was tiny but very rich so it was just enough for us.
As always we enjoyed our time together. :-)

This little gray tree frog sat on the railing next to our table the whole time we were there. They offered to move the cute little thing but we didn't mind it there at all and it never moved an inch. Our server said they have several of these little frogs that hang out there. Some times they sit on top of the umbrellas.

There was a bit of a problem getting in my street again to get to the garage. I have to pass the front of my house, go around a bend and turn into the street which leads to the back of my house, where the driveway is. I squeezed through some narrow spaces and got to the turn and then was stopped because there was a concrete truck pouring the driveways of the new houses right at the bottom of my street. I didn't want to back up because it was a pretty tight squeeze on a bend. So I waited for the pour to get done. The truck then pulled in my street to let me pass which was the street I had to turn up. He finally pulled out of my street and I was able to get to my garage. What an ordeal to get in the garage!

Did a few things around the house and then knitted on a white square for the sampler afghan.

Before long Ken came home from work and out again I went to eat. This time we went to Mamma Lucia's and met Cheryl there. It's restaurant week with a great special going on. Salad, any pasta dish, a drink and dessert all for just $10.99. We had a nice time eating and talking. I ate way too much food!! No snack for me tonight watching Netflix. I may skip tomorrows snack as well!!

Hope this Wednesday you had lots to smile about.

No more beard

On todays walk as I passed the tree that the beaver started on yesterday, I noticed that it too was cut down. Then I noticed on the other trees someone got smart and put a wire cage around the trunks. This should do the trick! :-)The other day when Ken and I were doing a jigsaw puzzle, he stopped for a while and went upstairs. Later he came back down and started working on the puzzle again. We were there for a bit and when I looked up at Ken, I was soooo surprised to see that he had shaved off his beard!!! (He still has the mustache) We have been married for over 37 years and he's only been without a beard for about 5 of those years. (there was a time when he was in the Navy that you weren't allowed to have them) Though I will miss his beard I like him this way too. :-) I wonder how long he'll go before he grows it back again!?

Another day at home doing house stuff - you know that stuff we all have to do!

Later in the afternoon I did go outside on the deck to read for a bit.

I had some chocolate chip cookies in the freezer and I had four of them for my snack tonight.
Well I guess that's about it for today. Hope your Tuesday was a happy one for you.
I'm off to do some more reading or maybe knit a white square.

This and That

Debbi told us about a state park that is up the road from the Weis where we get all that ice cream we like so much. We were out driving around yesterday afternoon and decided to go and check it out. It is a wonderful place with trails to go walking and hiking along. We weren't prepared for a hike then but plan on going back next weekend for a hike. Sure hope we have nice weather because I'm really looking forward to hiking there.

Today was a busy day at home. Now that I have three lines to hang out on the deck I got to hang out two large loads of laundry. By the way, there has been some talk about my clothes lines on the deck around the neighborhood. The home association is being formed now that the townhouses are almost all done. Someone complained, but my neighbors right across from me think that my lines are great and think it is ingenious how we made them for the deck. I'm sure there will be some more talk about the lines at other meetings but I don't really care because I am going to keep hanging my clothes outside!!

I spent a lot of time on the computer with Quicken and getting bills paid. I like when things are nice and orderly and Quicken keeps everything that way for me.

I took this picture on my walk. Looks like the beavers are at it again.
They have started on a few trees by the side of the road which have been cut down. I guess they didn't want them falling in the street. The beavers just keep going after the next tree in line.

After supper we went to the library and Ken got a couple of books out. I didn't get any because I'm still working on The Pillars of the Earth. Just haven't been reading much lately.
When we got back home, Ken parked his Vette in the street in front of our house. Then we walked the road to the garage in back looking for nails. Two of our neighbors were out walking and we stopped to talk for a bit.
Once we got back in the house we took our books and went to sit on the deck to read until dark.

Snacks tonight were muffins from Mimi's Cafe. Blueberry for me and Carrot Raisin Nut for Ken. We watched Seinfeld and I knitted on the blue ripple afghan. I'm finished with 11 strips and have 8 more to go. I was going to keep this one for myself but decided to give it away to a friend. The friend reads my blog so I won't mention her name.

That's about it for today. Hope your Monday had some happy moments scattered throughout the day.

The last puzzle and Sat Nite Cruisin

I started out walking down my street and was going to go to the pond I discovered last week and walk around it. Someone told me if I walked down the end of my road there was a path that lead to the pond. I never did find it and when I got to the end of my street I turned around and headed back. I then turned down a street that I knew would lead to the pond but came upon this path and just had to follow it! It eventually came out on the road the pond is on. When I reached the pond I had already walked 3 1/2 miles so didn't walk around the pond but just headed home and ended up walking my usual 6 miles. It was cooler out this morning and the sun was out.

Ken helped me finish up puzzle number five this morning.
The Porch
I was going to glue the pile of cars puzzle together but decided not to after all. All five puzzles are put back in their boxes to await the puzzle urge again. It was fun doing them but enough is enough! :-)

After supper we went to Marley Station Mall. Every Saturday evening in the summer in the parking lot it's Saturday Nite Cruisin . For an hour we walked around looking at all the old cars.
Here are some pictures.
Impala
Corvette
Hot Rod
Camaro

When we got back home we watched a couple episodes of Seinfeld and I had popcorn for my snack.

Hope you enjoyed your Saturday and got to do something fun.
Happyone :-)
