The problems arise if they see people as a food source. Attacks are rare, even with grizzlies, but can happen. Just be alert and you should be fine. And of course, never approach a wild bear but you are too smart to do that. I have encountered black bears while hiking a number of times, and they have always run. I respect them but do not fear them, and yes, we are all more in danger from other humans than from bears.

Even the mama bear I saw two days ago with two tiny cubs was not aggressive. She gathered her cubs and ordered them up a tree and was watchful bug never approached me. Now, if I had approached her in some fit of stupidity, all bets would be off.

I am glad that Ken had fun and that he is back home. When we lived in WV we saw black bears, and as eileeeninmd said, it's the mama bears to beware of, and even then she is just protecting her cubs; mostly they are more afraid of us than we are of them. I hope you had a nice supper out, and I'm glad Ken made it home safe and sound. As your blogging buddy, I've been more worried about a rabid fox or a dog off its leash. Ken's getaway sounds like fun...now surely there is one for the gals, too. It isn't as though you are just starting out on this walking the route you take.:) It sounds like a great day, regardless.:)

That is wonderful about Ken enjoying such good fellowship while he was away. It is always good to have our husbands return home, though.

Supper out sounds good. I made pizza, the first in a long time. I was too hungry and ate more than I should have eaten.

Enjoy your Saturday evening. I believe you are right about black bears, they seem more scared of people and run away..I would keep my distance from a mother bear and cub though.. Love the photos from your walk. Glad that Ken enjoyed his. Sounds like your new friend Peggy might be just a bit bossy and doesn't like it when people don't do what she tells them to. Glad you didn't meet any bears!
Enjoy your Sunday. I am taking a bit of "summer blogging break" so will have to catch up with you in a week or so.
