The caterpillar looks like he has been parasitized by eggs being laid on his back. Whatever did that - some kind of a fly or wasp - is providing fresh food for their offspring when they hatch. Not pleasant at all for the caterpillar, but nature's way. My oldest son kept some as pets when he was younger. I haven't seen a caterpillar like that at all. Sounds like it is so peaceful where you are.
