Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

Cheese cake and a primitive fence

My swing in Fall
❤     ❤     ❤     ❤
It was 58 degrees this morning and of course dark when I started walking.  After sunrise it was cloudy and eventually the sun came shining through.

I walked the farm loop, passed up my house and walked around town.

Saw two flocks of geese flying overhead. This time in a nice V formation.
I learned today that flying geese are called a flock and they are called a gaggle of geese when not in flight.

Said good morning to the outside cows at the dairy farm and listened to the roosters in the barn yard.  I'm happy to say that I've never seen those 6 little yippy dogs outside since the time they all came after me.  I still have a little scar where the one nipped me.

No people about today.
I walked 6.2 miles.

Today I spent the day cleaning the house and got most everything done.  I also made a cheese cake for dessert for our dinner guests tomorrow which are Pastor Leatherman and his wife Kathy.  We invited another couple but they weren't able to make it so it will just be the four of us.  Really looking forward to having them over, they have become good friends during this past year that we've been here.

My mother gave me this recipe for the cheese cake years ago and it is really really good.  It is easy to make but has a few steps and a long process of cooling down.

Cheese Cake
  • 1 lb cream cheese
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 5 eggs, separated
  • 1 pint sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Line a 9 inch spring form pan with graham cracker crust.
Stir cheese to soften
Add sugar - cream well
Add unbeaten eggs yolks - stir to blend
Stir in sour cream, vanilla, & lemon juice
Fold in stiff beaten egg whites
Pour into pan & put in 300 degree reheated oven
Bake 1 hour
Let cake remain in oven with heat turned off for another hour
Open oven door and let remain for 1/2 hour
Refrigerate overnight - if you can wait that long. : )

The egg whites get folded into the cream cheese mixture
and then into the graham cracker crust.
Then in the oven to bake and it comes out looking like this.  We like it plain but I know Pastor likes blueberries on cheese cake,  so I got some blueberry pie filling and some cherry pie filling as well.
While I was busy inside, Ken went up to Happy Trails for a few hours.  When he came home he popped his head in the door and said he had to unload the truck.  When I asked if he needed help, he said no.

After awhile he stuck his head in the door again and told me to come outside to see what he was working on.  Was I ever surprised to see a fence of tree logs started. Next year I would like to have a bigger vegetable garden and wanted to have a primitive fence around it.  I'd like it to have things growing in squares with paths between them.  This log fence is just the thing I was thinking about and I love it.
A view from the street.
It's been a good day.
Hope it's been a good one for you too.

Because you don't live near a bakery doesn't mean
that you have to go without cheesecake.

Three Things That Made Me Smile Today
  1.  Seeing the cows
  2. My cheese cake turned out looking good
  3. The log fence that Ken has started

Have a great time with your friends. The cheesecake will be a big hit. Email me a piece! ;^)
That fence will be great. Ken is a handy guy, and sounds like he enjoys his retirement a lot by doing useful things.

Have a great weekend. Art

Chuckling at the Hedy Lamarr quote. Your cheesecake looks wonderful! It is sure to be enjoyed by everyone at dinner!

We've not seen the geese around here flying in formation yet. I always like to see that.

What a nice fence you will have! I like your idea for your garden.

Man oh man you live in a gorgeous area for fall colors. I so want to walk down that road with you. Love Cheesecake. If I were closer I'd be over in a heart beat. I like the fence your hubby is building.
