Trick or Treat

It was a mild 52 degrees this morning.  I left at 6:45 so it was dark and there was a little bit of a mist at first but by the time I walked to the end of the street it had stopped.  Walked around in town where there were street lights and then I headed down the road toward Happy Trails.  I got around the curve up ahead in the picture when four dogs came running down to the road from their house.  I was a little leery of four of them together so I turned around at that point and headed back to the main road.  Just lately dogs seem to be around when I walk.

On the way back to town I stopped by the cows and then walked around the loop by the ball park and then back home.

Didn't see any other people walking or running around town.

I walked 6.1 miles - 11,471 steps.

Had a 9:30 hair appointment for a dye and cut.  Nice to be able to leave 5 minutes before the time and walk there. : )  Sherri cut about an inch or so off the ends.   It's still a layered bob.

The Trick or Treat time here in town was between 6 and 7.  We had 180 pieces of candy in two baskets to hand out.  At 6:50 we ran out of candy and had to turn our porch light off which means 'no more candy.'  It was a drizzly night but that didn't seem to keep anyone at home.
We had kids coming in droves and sometimes the driveway was covered with kids. I've never seen so many trick or treaters before.  We will definitely have to have more candy next year!!

Moon Shadow

Yesterday I reached a new personal best on my Striiv.

It was a warm 40 degrees this morning when I walked.  No wind and no sun coming up over the mountain today.  Just clouds.

I walked around town in the dark, around the town cemeteries and the loop by the ball park.  Stopped to talk to Lisa and the man that walks the white dog.  Still don't know his name - I'll find out next time I see him.

While walking around one of the cemeteries a big dog came up to me barking and his owner kept calling him to no avail.  I could tell the dog wasn't mean so I just walked over to the owner and the dog followed me to her.  She put the dog back on the leash and apologized to me.

I saw a couple of rabbits and geese over by the little pond.

I walked 6.3 miles - 12,455 steps.

We walked over to the library a little after 11:00 (opens at 11:00) to drop off a book, cancel one I had on hold and pick up some new ones.  I just got one about growing herbs.  I'd like to have an herb garden next year and figured I'd better learn about growing them first.

Across the street from the library a new little cafe opened up in town called Moon Shadow and we stopped there for lunch today.  Work has been going on inside and out for quite a while.  I took quick peeks in the windows when I'd walk by in the mornings but was looking forward to seeing it finished.

It is really nice.  There's an eclectic mix of furniture and dishes and everything is bright and cheery and the food is very good too.  I had mac and cheese and Ken had a Reuben.

There are two more rooms to the place but I didn't take pictures.  Friday evenings they have live local music.  We will certainly go back again.

We will be home the rest of the day.  It's misty out now so we aren't going up to HT.  I think I'll go read about herbs now.

A walk and a walk

I got up on time today and was out of the house at 6:30 in the dark!!  I looked up at the sky and saw thousands of stars and a crescent moon - so pretty.  It was 30 degrees, no wind and really quite nice.  I walked up the three roads behind my house which are pretty steep hills, but nice when going down!
Walked around town and up and down some of the little streets that are really no more than alleys. 

The one lone chicken was busy eating when I passed by.  Today breakfast looked like bananas and zucchini.

Walked to the farm just at the edge of town where the white cow lives.  Didn't see the white one but this black one stopped eating to take a look at me.

I saw one runner who I see sometimes but she doesn't stop to chat.  She does say good morning now though.  Lisa must have been having a random run around town because we passed each other three times on opposite sides of the street all three times.  Just exchanged a wave and a smile.

The sun was just peaking over the mountain when I got back home.

Well, were you wondering what our plans were for today?

After lunch we got in the truck and headed up to Savage River Forrest to check out some walking trails.
Blogger friend Art, from Oh To be Hiking was just there just a few weeks ago and it looked so pretty so I decided I best go there and check it out in person, we live just 25 miles away.  I hope the next time you are in the area Art, you let us know.  We can take a hike together up there. : )

We walked 4 miles along some trails.  We started here on the green trail.

We took a break and sat on this tree that had fallen across the path, had a drink and  Ken ate an apple and I ate some raisins and dried apricots.

At one point I stopped, looked up and took this picture.

It was a beautiful day - sunny and in the low 50's.  The trails are fun to walk along and I like finding the trail makers which were painted on the trees.  Most were easy to find but the goat trail had black paint and at times we really had to look for them.  No, we didn't see any goats. : ) We would have hiked longer but Ken wasn't feeling all that great.  He had a sinus headache but he was a good sport anyway.  We both look forward to going back and walking more of the trails.  Someday maybe Happy Trails will be just like this. : )

Mary Jo - Oh yes!  We have a life time of plans for Happy Trails.  The plan is one day to have walking trails all over our land.  We are making our own personal park. : )

Happy Trails

Another late start for me this morning and didn't leave until 7:30.  I think my body has already adjusted for the time change this weekend!
It was a chilly 28 degrees but there was no wind and the sun came out and as you know by now I dress in layers and stay nice and warm.
Walked on over to the post office and dropped a Netflix in the slot, walked passed the lone chicken and then headed up around the farm loop.
It was nice peaceful uneventful walk and didn't see any wildlife or people, but it was great to be out there. : )

The weather was nice and sunny so we went up to Happy Trails and spent several hours there.
We made a nice little log bridge over a wet area and lined out a path with logs that will eventually end behind the tracker barn.  Put down some chipped mulch that was left over from last time. 

Last time Ken was up alone he finished putting stones in around the little well he made and made a fence out of trees so no one would fall in it. 

We also cleared out some more brush and burned it in the fire barrel.  Ken got out the tractor and took some tree stumps to the tree stump area up the hill where the wood shop is.
This is my favorite time of year at HT.  With most of the leaves gone you can see a lot better, there are no bugs and you don't get too hot when working. 
It was really nice being up there and I'm glad I decided to go along with Ken today.
Didn't get a thing done around the house but oh well, there is always tomorrow.  Oh yeah we have something planned for tomorrow too. : )

A cold crisp morning

Ken left at 6:00 this morning to go to the train show in Tomomium.  I left the house an hour later than usual at 7:30 for my morning walk.  The temperature was the lowest it has been so far at 28 degrees.  BUT the sun came out and there was no wind and it was so nice out!!!  Felt good to walk in the sun for a change. : )

I walked first to the library and dropped a book in the slot and then went to the ATM at the bank.  Stopped home to drop off the money and then walked around the farm loop.  I saw farmer George drive by in his truck and another farmer out harvesting some more of his corn.  They were the only people I saw.

The cows were around but none came down to the fence and I saw a raccoon that didn't make it across the road in time.

The sun is just making it's way over the mountain and I'm about to start walking in the sun. : )

 It must get pretty windy up here because look at how that tree looks all blown to one side.

Now that the leaves are gone from this tree, I noticed two bird nests have been exposed.

I walked back to town, around the loop behind the ball park and then home.  What a beautiful clear crisp morning it was.

It stayed sunny but it got pretty windy as the day went on and it stayed quite chilly.
I set up the ironing board in front of the television, put an I Love Lucy DVD on and ironed 13 shirts.  I don't have to iron Ken works shirts anymore but do still have some ironing to do and I let it go way too long.  I had a couple of new blouses that I've never worn yet because I hadn't ironed them.  I'm all caught up now and plan not to go so long again.

I straightened up a few closets,  cleaned my office, and did a little coloring.  After getting the mail,  even though it was pretty chilly, I put up my hood and sat in the swing in the yard for about 20 minutes swinging and enjoying the sun. : )

I'm on my own tonight for supper and haven't decided yet what I'll have. Maybe I'll skip it altogether and have a bowl of ice cream. : )

Vee - I really haven't noticed the wind blowing so far, but as a rule mornings are calm and the wind picks up during the day.  It must get pretty windy though at times as you can tell from the picture of the tree today.
We did go out last night - Ledo's - salads and cheese pizza.  

A late start

I woke up right at 6:00 as usual but I must have need extra sleep because I fell right back to sleep and didn't wake up till 7:30!!  So I got a late start walking. 
It was only 30 degrees out with a bit of a wind but I wore a good amount of layers and stayed perfectly warm.  It wasn't so much foggy as walking through some low hanging clouds.  At one point for about 20 minutes some freezing snow fell from the sky.  I don't think I've walked in freezing snow before.  They were tiny tiny little frozen balls of snow.  It made the neatest sound on all the different things it fell on - all slightly different.  I could even hear it falling on my hood. 

One field I walked passed must have had hundreds of geese sitting there.  I couldn't get them all in the picture, they were all spread out over quite a distance.

When farmer George harvests his corn it is nice and neat in rows without any waste.

 I can't help but notice that this big tractor and the whatever that piece of equipment is called harvests the corn it leaves such a mess behind.  I bet the deer and other animals like it. : )

I'm on my way up here to one of the cemeteries and there were corn fields on either side of the road.  Now it is so open with all the corn gone.  And look at the mess it left.

I walked some in town and also the farm loop. 
There were some deer around, but all the cows were hiding somewhere because I didn't see any at all.

It was really a nice walk.  I actually like walking when it's cold out.  Maybe not in the single digits but for now I like it.

We've been home expect for going out to pick up a few things at the Dollar General.  It's been cloudy today but I've just noticed that there are a few breaks in the clouds and I can see some blue sky as I look at the window here in my office. : )

Diane - I use a little scoop I got from Pampered Chef.  They have three sizes and I use the smallest one for the cookies.

In the kitchen

Didn't start walking until 7:00 and then it was 32 degrees, windy and it was snowing out.  I started with my umbrella up and I could actually hear the snow flakes falling on it, but soon took it down because I felt silly having an umbrella for the snow.   I stopped at the post office to drop a letter in the mail slot and then walked to public works to drop off the water bill in the slot there.  Walked backed home and left my umbrella by the back door and then walked around town.  By this time the snow had stopped and I could even see a little blue sky before it clouded up again.

As I passed by the lone chicken I noticed that she had lots of hay in her coop now to keep her warm.

I walked around one of the cemeteries and down the main road for a mile and then back home.
There was one runner and one other walker out, both of them on the other side of the road as me so just had a quick wave and said good morning.

I was sad to read a sign on the bakery door that said,  "Moving to a new location at the Shop and Save" which is just 6 miles down the road but still it won't be the same with it not in town anymore.  The shop was very small and Ken thinks maybe they want to add some tables and maybe coffee and just needed a bigger place.  We shall wait and see.

I had on a few layers of clothing and was even a little warm as I walked.

I tried a new kind of bread in the bread machine today.

Summer Wheat Bread.

1  3/8 cups water
1 1/2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
2 Tablespoons molasses
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups bread flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons active dry yeast.

Put liquid ingredients in bread pan.
Add dry ingredients except yeast to bread pan.
Use your finger to form a well in the flour and put the yeast in it.
Put the setting on whole wheat setting and wait for 3 1/2 hours to have a delicious loaf of whole wheat bread.  We had a piece while it was still warm and it was very good!

Baked another batch of cookies.  I used the same chocolate chip cookie recipe but instead of putting in chocolate chips, I put in cinnamon chips. These were very good too.  I had one, but Ken kept sneaking one every now and then as they cooled on the rack.

I also made some Bean Soup which we will have for supper along with the Summer Wheat bread.

Vegetable Bean Soup

Tablespoon olive oil

2 celery stalks

2 carrots

1 onion

1 zucchini

2 cans cannellini beans

1 Teaspoon Basil (I used at least 2)

1/4 teaspoon pepper

16 oz can stewed tomatoes

14 oz chicken broth

1 bag of baby spinach

Dice celery, slice carrots, chop onion, dice zucchini.  

Empty one of the cans of cannellini beans in bowl and mash.

Saute celery, carrots, onion, zucchini, basil and pepper till vegetables are tender in oil.

Stir in tomatoes, broth, spinach, mashed beans, rest of beans and 2 cups water and cook over high heat to boiling.  

Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 15 minutes.  (I let it simmer for a little over an hour.)

Serve with Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top.

The first flakes

It was 34 degrees and dark when I left this morning for my walk.  I walked to the end of town (just a few blocks) and it started raining so I headed back home and got my umbrella.  Then walked around town some more and by the time I got up the hill to the school the rain had turned into snow.  It didn't last long though and then nothing was falling out of the sky.

Walking around the farm loop I noticed that since I'd been here the other day some of the soy bean crops have been harvested.

 The barn still hasn't been painted or a door put up but there was a gate across the opening and cows were inside.  They are black so it may be hard for you to see them in the picture.  They didn't seem at all pleased to be cooped up in there either because they were making quite a racket with their mooing.

I saw a rabbit and four deer.  Haven't seen deer in quite a while so it was nice to see them again.

No people were out that I saw.
A block away from home the rain started again and by the time I was in the house it was snowing in big white flakes.

I walked 6.1 miles - 12,072 steps.
I found a dime today! : )  The first coin this month!

There was no snow accumulation but it was kind of neat to see it falling from the sky already.  It doesn't show up so good in the picture but I thought I'd get a picture of the first flakes of the season.

We decided to take a drive down to La Vale to the Kohl's.  They were having a sale as usual and we had a coupon for 30% off on top of that.  I stocked up on some long sleeve turtle neck tee shirts.  I have such a hard time finding them laltely and that is what I wear every day with jeans.

I've been looking for a pair of rain pants but haven't been able to find any that I like yet.  Stopped in at a sports store but they didn't have them either.
What I did buy were boots for the snow.  Not work boots but ones to wear when we go out this winter. They are warm and comfortable.  And how about those pink laces! : ) I'm all set for the snow now. 

It's been a nice day in spite of the rain/snow showers.  We will be going out again later for supper to the Mountain State Brewery for their brick oven pizza. Oh Boy!! : )

Nellie - Yes, I do think the weather might be a factor walking here some days more than it was where I used to live.  But we shall see.  I'll certainly try to get out there every day.

Vee - Yes, it is a bit weird that the weather can be so different where we live than where we used to live even though it is the same state.  It has to do with the higher elevation and we are way out in the pan handle, just 14 miles from WV and about the same from PA.  Just 60 miles south of Pittsburgh.

RK - Actually Ken ran into a knitting group at the place he goes for coffee and a bagel once in a while but they meet at 7:00 in the morning and it's just not a good time for me.  One of the ladies in the knitting group is in my book club.

From rain to sun

It was a rainy morning and I didn't wake up till a little before 7:00 so got a late start walking.  It was warmer than yesterday at 42 degrees, but the rain made it feel colder and it was windy too.  The wind almost took my umbrella a couple of times.  I got pretty wet and ended up only walking 3.8 miles.  I have to buy another pair of rain pants.  After I wore mine the last time I threw them away.  The lining inside was coming apart in pieces.  The only thing that didn't get wet this morning was my head.  I am thankful for small things. : )

I walked around the cemeteries in town and the loop behind the ball park.  Didn't see any animals or people either.  Just cars.  It felt good walking in the house where it was dry and warm. : )

We had planned on going to Happy Trails but the weather kept us from going.  The sun did come out to shine in a bright blue sky later in the afternoon but by then it was too late.  The temperature stayed at 42 all day.

I baked some chocolate chip cookies.  Ken is going to the train show down in Tomonium this weekend and Howard who owns the show is a friend of ours who loves my chocolate chip cookies so these will be for him.

When  my kitchen counter tops were made the part that they cut out for the sink was made into a cutting board.  I could have had one big one or two smaller ones but I chose the two smaller ones.  They just round the edges off and put little plastic feet on it.  They hadn't had time to do that last week and did it over the weekend.  We stopped by the shop today and picked them up.
There was a little stream along side the shop and these were swimming around there.  I think the white one is a duck but I think the others are some kind of geese.  Anyone know?

I started reading the next book for the book club.  This one is The House of Velvet and Glass by Katherine Howe.  Even though I just started it, so far I'm not that impressed but I'll give it some time.  Maybe it is just a slow starter for me.

A chilly start

It was the coldest morning so far with a temperature of 32.  The sun came up though and there was no wind.  It was clear and crisp and beautiful and I loved being outside and walking!

The sun shining on the hills like that was just beautiful.  Sometimes the beauty just takes my breath away.  And pictures never really capture it completely.

I walked a little bit in town waiting for the sky to get that morning glow to it and then I headed around the farm loop.  I went in the opposite direction so it was still too early for the school traffic.
Farmer George has one of his corn fields completely cut down.  There is still a lot left to go and he was working when I passed by.

Saw a few cows but it was pretty quiet out there.  I saw a few V's of geese fly across the sky too.

I walked 6.2 miles - 11,819 steps.

It warmed up nicely to the mid 50's by mid morning and I headed out in my car and went up the road to Walmart.  I went by myself and took my time just walking around.  I got a nice new black purse for church and also picked up a few items from the grocery section.

I was out in the parking lot and I heard someone call my name.  It was Pastor Leatherman and we had a nice little chat.  He is so nice and I'm so pleased to have found another great pastor and church. : )  He is a happy, energetic, kind man and is pretty funny too.

The sheets are outside on the line blowing in this nice cool sunny day.  They should be dry about now so I'd better go and take them in and get them back on the bed.  We get to smell that outdoor fresh smell all night long.  That thought is enough to make anyone happy. : )

These Mondays roll around pretty fast.

Walking stick

When we were walking around at the Autumn Glory festival in Oakland the other week people were handing out these beaded walking sticks.  It is used as a way to tell people about Jesus.  The beads all have a meaning.

Yellow or gold represents Heaven. 
Somewhere we all want to go.

A walk, an auction and cookies

There was definitely a nip in the air this morning.  Only 35 degrees, with bit of a wind.  Some frost around too.  It was nice though, I love this cool walking weather.

The moon was still looking pretty out there too.  Not looking as big as last night but still picture worthy.

I walked up and down the main street in town until the sky lighted up a bit and then walked the farm loop.  Since it was Saturday I didn't have to worry about the traffic on the school road.

Very quiet out there this morning,  just few rabbits and cows were about.

I made pancakes for breakfast on my new counter tops and washed the dishes in my new sink.  : )

We headed out to an auction soon afterwards in Oakland.  It was a moving sale auction and it was held in part of a building that was  some kind of metal factory.  This side was roped off. 

And the other side was where all the stuff was.  There was more stuff outside too.

After a while I wandered around outside a bit and took this picture.

 We bid on a couple of things but didn't get them -  a rocking chair for the porch and some wooden snack trays.
What we did get was these Easter egg and candy dishes, a cute little candle and two little bunnies.  It was all in one box and we got it for just $2.  The candy dishes still had the price tags on them.  Each one was $10.99.
