Walking is the perfect way of moving if you want to see into the life of things. It is the one way of freedom. If you go to a place on anything but your own feet you are taken there too fast, and miss a thousand delicate joys that were waiting for you by the wayside. Elizabeth von Arnim

A couple of visitors

So ends the nice cool morning streak.  The heat has returned with a temperature of 71 degrees and the humidity is back as well.  There was a breeze so it really wasn't all that bad.  I walked around the lake again.  Less people than usual, maybe because it looked and felt like rain was on its way, though i made it home before the rain started.
It seems the geese are slowly returning.  More of them there today again.  I only saw one deer and it was a baby on its own.  I wondered where its mom had got to.
I walked around the lake and went up to the upper path like usual but then took this path
which goes back down to the lake.  The path comes out just a little farther along the lake from where i left the lake path in the first place.
A lake view
The intersection right down the street from my house that they have been working on now has lines and arrows drawn on the road.  Now they just have to paint the lines and take away the cones and it will be ready for cars. A crosswalk with lights will also be there, though i won't be using it.  I find it safer to go up the road farther and cross away from the cars.
Since i walked a little bit longer by the lake today i didn't bother walking extra around the block but just headed straight home.
I sat out on my front stoop for a few minutes and took my shoes off and cooled off a bit before going inside.  Snapped this picture while sitting there.
I walked 6.6 miles

We've had a mixture of rain and sun and clouds today.  During a sunny time i walked across the street to the Giant and picked up a couple of things i needed for supper tonight.  I'm making tacos and needed sour cream and lettuce.  The grapes caught my eye and i got some of them too.  As most of you know i go to the commissary for my grocery shopping but if i just need a couple of items i just go close to home here.

Another six months has come and gone and once again tomorrow it is time to take that dreaded trip to the dentist for a cleaning.  I don't like to go but i don't really mind either because of my great dentist.  I usually take him some of my chocolate chip cookies so i made a batch today.  I was super good and didn't even eat one of them!!!  I made them just before lunch so even though i was hungry i knew i would be eating soon and that helped me not to eat a cookie.
It's been a while since i've made cookies and this was the first time i used my new cookie sheets.  I think one of the secrets of making good chewy cookies that don't brown too much is these cookies sheets.  That layer of air between layers works well.

Today a hummingbird paid a visit to the flowers growing in the pot out on the deck.  I don't have a feeder so was pleasantly surprised to see him there.  He was too fast to get a picture though.
Another visitor today was the praying mantis again.  I wonder if it is the same one.  This time it was on the back door.  I took this picture of him right through the glass.  See how good that Perfect Glass cleaner works!!!  : )

We have been watching the fifth season of Dexter from Netflix.  It got off to a slow start but it has some twists in it this season.  We are on the second disc now and will probably watch another one this evening.

Now I'm off to clean up the kitchen.  I make such a mess when I bake.

Hope your Thursday is a good one.
A smile from me to you.

Hummingbirds and preying mantis are my favorites! They generally totally ignore my feeder and go right for the flowers (the hummingbirds, that is). I get so excited every time I see them!

Not sure if you are in the direct path of Hurricane Irene... But please read the post I just posted, (Thurs. 5PM) and do let us know.

A comment, so I don't forget, if you are or are not. (I know the path will change, but not some of it) And then think about being very sure to post, after it goes by you. So all your Dear Readers know that you still have power and are fine.

Just finished cleaning the patio doors. Wish I had a praying mantis out there to look at. I once had a praying mantis for a pet. I loved that little guy, which is why I'm wondering why I'm so freaked out by looking at this one...I enlarged twice! They really do look like aliens. *Shudder*

Tacos? Pizza? But, of course, anyone who averages 6.5 miles a day gets to eat whatever she wants! ☺

I come upon mantises (mantids?) while I'm clearing out my flowerbed; they are the same color as the grass stalk they're on, and I'm always startled when they move. I've always like mantises, although one ate my "pet" katydid, also a favorite insect. ah well...the law of nature...

I would be more than happy to sample those chocolate chip cookies to make sure they are good enough to give to your dentist. We had a very hot, dry day here today. We could use some of the rain you got.

Hi Karen, Looks like another great day and hike for you... Good luck with your dentist. I'm sure he'll do an extra good job since you are taking him some cookies...

Hope you all will be safe from the upcoming storm. Prayers and Hugs,
Betsy

A great picture of the praying mantis. I think they are so cool. I was trying to take a picture of an interesting looking insect yesterday, but they all came out blurry. Guess I need to get the camera manual out.
My patio door is in need of a good cleaning. I am going to pick up some of that cleaner this weekend and give it a try. Yours look great.
Have a wonderful weekend.
