Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself;
I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today.
I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet.
I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.

A walk in the rain

I walked just a tad over 7 miles this morning in the pouring rain.  I walked around the lake and then some.  Great walking in the rain.  I wore my rain pants and took along that new huge golf umbrella.  This is going to sound silly but that umbrella got heavy after 7 miles!!  It was so nice listening to the rain on the umbrella and being practically the only person by the lake. The whole time out I only saw three men joggers and one other woman walking.  I see the woman all the time and we stopped to chat for a few minutes.  She is from Seattle and said she feels right at home in the rain.
The only wild life I spotted today was ducks, geese, the heron and the white egret.  I stopped to watch the egret fly low over the water.  A few geese walked across the path in front of me and I could see the drops of water roll off their backs.
The picture is of the little stream that runs along the path I walk on my way to the lake.  It is quite high already and it is supposed to rain a lot more today.  I'm sure later on it will overflow its banks.
I'm planning on staying home all day in this rain.
I may post again later tonight.
Enjoy your Thursday.
Happyone :-)

  1. Good for you Karen, not letting a little rain stop you. Anything gets heavy, even a feather, if you carry it long enough. I find that I might as well not wear raingear for something like this, because I get so wet from the inside out. That is how it was with my hike last Sunday, I eventually took off my raingear after getting soaked from sweat. It was much more comfortable. Keep those legs moving! And enjoy the day! Art

  2. I check your blog about everyday. Sooner or later you are going to motivate me to get out there and start walking. When I was working I walked two to three miles everyday. I think that was mostly to destress. Since I've retired all I can come up with is excuses not to. I do have a question as to your walking shoes. I know I went through quite a few pairs and some were better than others. Is there any particular brand you like?

  3. Wanda, Try walking first thing in the morning when you get up. There is no time for an excuse. The hardest part is just getting started. Just get out there! You can do it. :-)

I always buy New Balance. I've never had a problem with them or my feet.!! (knock on wood)
When I first put on a pair of walking shoes, they have to feel great right away. If they don't feel right I won't buy them.

  5. OK. I have a golf umbrella. So next rainy morning--if the wind's not too strong--I will not be deterred.
The doom sayers (oh, I mean weather prophets) predict that next week's temps will be in the 60's with possibly 30's at night. It should be great walking weather here.
I will think of you while I'm slogging away out there.

  6. Everything looks so lush and green. I love the freshness that the rain always brings.

Thanks for visiting today. No, the kitchen is not mine; just one of the many homes we have stayed in during our travels. I'm sure I would like your kitchen then too, as I thought this one was just about perfect!

  7. I think my main fear (excuse) is dogs. I live in a rural area and I don't trust dogs in small/short fences. Some folks tell me to wear and use a whistle, but I think I need mace or a stun gun. I would feel safer, and in the event of an attack I would have something to defend myself. I know I sound a tad paranoid, but the sight of some of the dogs in the neighborhood when I am in my car is enough to prevent me from walking! I guess the only way I will know whether they will jump the fence is to try a walk!

New Balance should use you in an advertisement. I have worn New Balance running shoes. (Yes, I used to run! a long time ago! ) Don't know why I never tried a walking shoe. I got stuck on Reeboks. Everytime I tried new ones they just didn't feel as good as my old ones. I finally gave up on them.

    Thanks for sharing!

  8. I see that you found something better to do with your evening than to post again. What a lot of bird life you see on your walks. I never see that much around here.

  9. I've heard about all the rain that has fallen on the East Coast. You are very dedicated to be walking so far in such a downpour. I hope you soon get some sunshine.

  10. Look at that stream!!!
I like the sound of rain on an umbrella, too. I can imagine that after seven miles, even an umbrella would get heavy!
